Sharpmaker Question

Have any of you affixed abrasive film to the rods of your Sharpmaker to give it a coarser or smoother grit? I've got some film on the way (for sharpening convex edges) and wanted to know if this was a plausible idea.

The 40 micron abrasive film fits over the corners of the 204D rods, but even going light tends to wear them out.
