G'day All

I was recently given a CRKT M16-12Z (Tanto point, 1/2 serrated) by a friend and would like to know the best method for sharpening it using the sharpmaker.

As the blade is a tanto point should I sharpen the whole blade in one stroke or sharpen the point seperately?

All suggestions and info appreciated. :)

Thanx!

I have a sharpmaker but never had a tanto.
I never could figure out how to sharpen one either! But since you have to now, I think that sharpening the long edge , then the tip would be best , cause when you change directions at the tip, chances are you'll wobble or change the angle that you're trying to hold. Also , get a felt tip pen & mark the edge on both sides of the blade, to be sure that the sharpmaker is actually working on the edge , not the back bevel. Some knives have the wrong angle & have to be back beveled.

Ferreter, watch the video that came with the Sharpmaker again and as Sal goes through tools, you will surely come up with Ideas on the tanto tip. You may end up laying the rods in one of the flat positions.
I dont own a tanto , but have sharpened lots of things with mine.Hmmmm.. the scissor angle may work on the tanto. Let us know what you find.

On most tanto tips you would sharpen them the same way as you would sharpen an ax.Apple seed grind.

It takes a good deal of practice on the severely angled tantos.

It just takes practice. Stand above the stones looking down, it's easier to keep the same angle on the edge physically and the wrist has a chance to change directions when the angle changes.

Thanks for the suggestions & info guys :) , The blade is still nice and sharp, but I reckon I'll blunt it fairly quick at work  (hardware store, anything from boxes to timber). When I sharpen it i'll post a reply with the results! :D
