I have a PE Spyderco Delica, VG-10, that is my EDC and have always sharpened free hand but have heard so many good things about the sharpmaker that I'd like to try one. Where is the best buy on one and what should I get? Isn't there different rods available on these kits? By the way my delica had never been sharpened freehand, haven't had it long and still has the sharp factory edge, but I want to be prepared to sharpen it since it is my EDC- great knife is a understatement! great forum also and you guys give great advice! thanks in advance.

Homeslice,

www.newgraham.com has 'em for just under $43. They also have the lowest prices I've seen (and I haven't seen everything) for diamond Sharpmaker hones. What I learned, after buying the diamond ones, is that you can either pay $57 + s/h for diamond sleeves or glue or tape coarse-grit sandpaper to your existing Sharpmaker hones and pay a little time and less than $1 for a faster-cutting alternative to the diamond hones.

Along with the medium and fine hones that come with the Sharpmaker, I also enjoy the ultra-fine hones that are sold separately. After getting the edge to a high degree of sharpness with the medium and fine hones, the ultra-fine hones add a very nice finishing touch.

Thom: I was about to buy some diamond stones for my 204.
You say the taped sandpaper is faster?
What grit would you recommend to try?
It would be mostly used on ATS-34.

If you had it to do over again, you'd bypass the diamond & go right to the sandpaper?

Thanks.

Dan

Dan,

I'd use 60 for fast-and-dirty work or 180 for something faster than the diamond sleeves, but still able to quickly be cleaned up with the medium hones. If the grind being reprofiled is really thick, I'd use 60 grit. Otherwise, 180/220 is good enough.

If I had to do it over again, I'd probably still end up with the diamond sleeves, but if I had to do it over again a third time, I'd just use sandpaper.

sandpaper is faster. no question about it. I also find that most people would just use the edge of the diamond sleeves, and not the flats, and that would mean $ being wasted.
