I'm finally looking to buy one of these. i remember that someone offered the Sharpmaker with an extra set of rods, but I can't remember who now!

Where is the best place to buy a Sharpmaker?

Regards,

Jeremy

While we're asking questions about it, is this the same sharpmaker everyone is talking about? Also, where can you get the fine and extra fine rods? How the hell are people sharpening to different angles on those things?

I purchased mine along with the Ultra Fine rods (they are not free but put a nice finished, polished edge to your blade) from www.newgrahamknives.com. They are a very good and reputable store and I have purchases a half dozen knives from them in the past. Very fair prices and excellent customer service.

The system comes with Medium and Fine rods. The Ultrafine are an extra (need to order a pair). There are now Diamond Coarse rods for reprofiling but by the time you have purchased all of these extras, IMO you should save up a few extra bucks and buy an Edge Pro Apex. Its the best and most versatile sharpener on the planet and should last you a lifetime. It allows you to reprofile to any angle you want as well as putting on a primary bevel at any angle you want. With the polish tapes, you can put an absolute killer edge on any steel you have, ZDP 189 included (I know from personal experience).

The Sharpmaker is fine for sharpening a reasonably sharp blade to has a bevel of either 30 or 40 degrees. It will take you forever to take a 40 degree blade and reprofile to add relief to 30 degrees unless you purchase the expensive diamond rods.

Try this link and look at the #2 Ultimate System. It is what I have and I've never looked back! http://www.bronksknifeworks.com/Edge-Pro_Knife_sharpeners.htm

You won't be sorry.

Wait, the Sharpmaker shaprens to 30 degrees???

The sharpmaker works at 30 (15 degrees per side) or 40 (20 degrees per side).
You can also use the stones in a flat, benchstone-like configuration.
The stones are not coarse, so you need something else to do major profile jobs.

You can select different angles by propping the base on books or paper of varying thicknesses to get the angle you want.

To all: I think we need two sticky threads in the toolshed. One for tips and help with the sharpmaker and the other for the edgepro. We could just accumulate all the advice for these systems in one place.

Ackkkkkkkk! You've asked two different questions in the same post -- that drives moderators nuts!

This thread seems to be mostly about the Sharpmaker so I'll move it to The Toolshed: Knife Care, Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment. Go to The Good, The Bad, The Ugly! to find out which are the best places to buy things.

As there are big fans of each system on this forum; I second the suggestion.
