Greetings! first post - I have owned an old model sharpmaker ( single angle ).for about 10 years and have sharpened countless knives with it. Recently the rods seemed to become slick and did not remove metal well. I always scrubbed the rods with an old toothbrush and bon ami or cleanser. This no longer works. I also tried an eraserblock to no avail. I bought new rods and everything works fine again. Do the rods just wear out or is there a way to restore them? Thanks in advance for your help :)

Use a medium grit sand paper or emery cloth to "revitalize" them. Scrub them with Scotch Brite and Comet cleanser or steel wool kitchen pads; keeps em fresh! :D

From what I recall of the instructional video that came with my Sharpmaker, Sal says that the medium grit (brown) stones will eventually wear out and need to be replaced. I think that after 10 years, even restoration tricks might start failing. Treat yourself to some new ones! :)
