I have a sharpmaker and my white rods got little chips on a couple sides whith out much use. I just used the good side. I have recently got the ultra fine rods and after 2 knives they are getting the little chips. I contacted spyderco and they said they came from use. This does not seem right to me. Am I doing something wrong to get these chips? Can I fix these somehow? I really like the sharpmaker for touchups, but It really stinks that my white rods get screwed up so fast.
Any advice or thoughts?

What have you been doing to them, just sharpening? How do you wash them?

I've used mine for a few months now and they're fine.

Something is not right. They should be more durable than that. I've had mine for 7 years with one small chip near the end that does not effect anything.

Are you using the prescribed technique that came with the Sharpmaker? Perhaps you are using too much pressure and trying to go too fast? I've had Sharpmakers since 1996 and the only chips I experienced came from an impact from me accidently dropping one stone.

I don't think I use to much pressure. It doesn't take much. On my ultrafine I have only sharpened 2 knives and use the weight of the blade only.

I've had mine chip but it was only when I dropped them. Ceramic is extremely brittle and will often chip with little pressure in the wrong direction. Does it affect you're ability to use them? In other words, is it in the middle of a rod?

The video that comes with the stones explains just about everything in the care, use, and maintenance of the Sharpmaker. ;)

The stock ones were used on the good side quite often, I clean them with bar keepers friend and a scotchbright pad. My new ultrafine rods a have wiped with a paper towel(they have been used that Little), and no they were not like that when I got them. I guess I will try contacting spyderco again. Last time they told me they do get wore out. This really sucks because there is nothing I found that sharpens my traditional carbon slipjoints as good nothing! I'll report what happens. They work so good I will even buy a new set If I have to.

any updates? I just noticed that I have a rough edge on my fine stones on my SM. I have only been sharpening on them for about 2 months and I have not used any type of hard pressure knor dropped them or banged them together :(

Spyderco had me send them in. They really wouldn't say anything else without seeing them. They always seem to take care of things. I hope they at least replace my new ultrafines. I will let you know in about 3 weeks.
