I picked up a Sharpmaker yesterday at Blade Show West. Last night I got all the knives in the house shaving sharp. As Sal said in the video "sharper than new". Although my Sebenza is shaving sharp it's not as sharp as new.
Sal also stated in the video that some people use the 30 degree angle to sharpen and get a scary sharp edge. Do any of you use 30 degrees to sharpen your Sebenza?
Also Sal recomends alternating from side to side, but Joe Talmadge recomends lapping one side until you raise a burr than switching to the other side. Which method do you use?
Thanks in advance for your input. Jerry

I just sharpened my Sebenza w. the Sharpmaker. I noticed it is considerably sharper if you 'touch it up' using the grey stick corner and stop there. When I followed the standard procedure and finished with the white fine stick it did not produce as sharp an edge. A few touches using the grey stick corner has it sharp as new.

My magnifying glass has wandered so I cannot check the edge up close, the combination of blade material and micro-serrations make it very sharp with the coarse stones.

I use the forty degree angle, and alternat from side to side. I have been using the white stones to maintain the edge. Although this last time i had to start from scratch and use all the stones and angles. It is fine now but not sure why it dulled so fast.

Must have been one of those days. I read the follow-up post by Hermie and tried the complete Sharpmaker process. This time the edge is hair popping sharp. Whatever happened, the Sebenza is back to super sharp.

Thanks for the post.

I use the original Sharpmaker with the 40deg. set up.If the edge is pretty dull I will do one side until a burr is made then start sharpening as recommended in the instructions.I guess after many sharpenings I will catch up to the factory edge bevel and then I will have to add some thinning bevels or have CRK re-grind the edge.I can get a very sharp and durable edge with the 40deg setup.

Hi M2Fun, glad you were able to get the blade where you wanted it. The spyderco systems really are great.
Now i am just tying to convince the wife a box elder inlay is begging to be sharpened it just needs to come home.

I have a Spyderco. I have never used it.
I should try it.
I use a flat, large stone free hand.
The angle depends on the use the blade is going to be put to.
20 degrees is about right for a Sebenza.
It is not an axe.
I work an even burr on one side and reverse.
Then I do the same at a more acute angle.
With a little more work, you can meld this into a convex edge, which is the best.
With steeling, this edge will last a long time.
