sharpmaker rods and angles

Here's a question for the sharpmaker experts. I just got the diamond rods for my sharpmaker and when inserted into the slots I noticed they sit lower (giving a greater angle) than the brown and white rods.

When inserted into the 40 deg slots the tips of the rods measured about 5.5 inches apart. I decided to measure the white and brown rods they are close but aren't exactly the same either, the white are about 5 inches apart and the brown 5.2 inches.

Wouldn't this give different angles when switching between rods and affect the overall edge of the knife?

Are the rods different lengths? The angle should remain the same regardless of the length of the rods or the distance between the ends of the rods.

V vs v

Of course longer rods will be farther apart, as they are pointed away from each other. But that will have absolutely zero effect on the angle.

I attached a picture to better demonstrate what I am trying to say, hopefully it helps. The rods are the same length. Maybe half inch variance is acceptable tolerances? Maybe it's just my sharpmaker? Seems like this would change the angle.

It's the angle of the blade to each rod. Not the distance between the rods. As long as the base is correct you should be good to go...

I see what Kyle78 is saying now, my bad. Rods are the same length and in the same slots, but still slightly further apart so must be different angles. I've never really paid much attention to it but in my Sharpmaker the ceramics fit looser than the diamonds. I would imagine this would have a small effect on the angle but I've never noticed. I'll check mine out tomorrow and see if it's as big of a difference as yours. Never impaired my Sharpening, but now I'm curious.

I have noticed this also with my sharpmaker. The stones fit much looser than the diamond rods in the base, causing them to rock back to a steeper angle. I would like it if the stones were as tight fitting in the base as the diamond rods. At least it isn't the other way around with the corasest rod being the loose one resulting in a lot of work to get the stones cut all the way to the edge.

Difference in .5" would give you a difference about 2 degrees per side, which can be a concern, if you are using the same slots for all rods.
The first of all, I am not sure that corners of diamond rods supposed to be used. I had an impression that only flats on diamonds are the work surfaces. The second, I would not place diamond rods in 40 degrees slots. Diamond rods intended for repair and reprofiling, so I would use them only at 30 degrees. Gaps in 30 degrees slots could be smaller, so difference in angle will be smaller as well. I would repeat your measurements at 30 degrees and change orientation of rods. If problem still exist, you can try replace diamond rods or just use them at 30 degrees setting and others at 40.

Per my digital angle cube, I have a couple degrees of variance in all my stones. Between the white UF, the brown ones and th diamond rods. Mine is VERY used, and only has one set of holes, so it might just be a bit sloppy. Per my digital angle cube it's diamonds- 24* browns-22.65* white UF-23.9. I'm thinking this is just slop in the holes that has developed over the years. I think most folks would not ever be picky enough to tell. I never really noticed it over the years. I don't use my Sharp Maker much anymore. Since I got my Wicked Edge, I take most knives down to the 15-17 dps range. That means the SM would be micro beveling everything I put on it. YMMV.
