I use the sharpmaker system every once in a while, the ultra fine rods with the red on the ends has worn off, I'm having a hard time telling which rods are fine and which are ultra fine, any suggestions

I'm going to guess that you can no longer tell which is which... not that you need ideas on how to mark them?
One thought would be to look at the ends under magnification... chances are, there's at least a small remnant of red that you'll be able to see. If that doesn't work... you could get a piece of metal and 'scrub' it on each stone, and see if you can see a difference in the finish.

Hi,
The fine rods should feel rougher and seem less shiny
than the ultra fine rods
because the ultra fine rods are merely polished ( pre-worn ) fine rods
In addition to what cbwx34 says
there ought to be a difference in the amount of swarf remaining on the stone after same number of passes.
