Sharpmaker + sandpaper instead of diamond rods??

I have a Sharpmaker which works well for touch ups but would like some courser stones for removing stock / rebevelling.

I am going to get some diamond rods but they are not available at the moment from the places I buy from (choices are limited when you are outside the USA).

I remember reading about someone using sandpaper wrapped around their sharpmaker rods to create a more aggressive rod. Could anyone give me advice on:

What type of sandpaper to use?
What grit to use?
How to attach to the sharpmaker rod?
Any other tips or advice?

Thanks

Works great!

I just went to the local auto supplies shop and bought a pack of "wet or dry" paper in various grades. Cut it to size and fold around the rods. I use a couple of small "bulldog" type clips to hold it in place. Cheaper than diamond rods by a long way :D

I just tried out some ruby rods from congress tool inc in 150 and 250. They work great for profilling and are only 3 something each. Mine fit well in the sharpmaker. So far I like them better then the diamond rods.

I use wet/dry sandpaper as well with clips. I use them on the corners. Seems that if you use that method on the 30 degree slots it will end up being a bit above 30. Maybe I just did it wrong. Others should chime in.

Sounds great. I just found Congress Tools' Ruby Degusset Stones - triangular for $40+? Which ones did you get? Do they fit snugly? Do you think they cause any excessive wear in the Sharpmaker base? Any help would be appreciated.

They are the ruby sharp aluminum oxide. I didn't really think of excessive wear I think I'll try some lube mabey just water and see how that works. On the post that I read about them he said they don't always fit and you might have to grind them a little. The moldmaster might be good to there silicone carbide they would probably work on s90v. There both under polishing on the site

I thought about buying the diamond rods, but I haven't heard many good things about them, especially for the price. I've tried the ruby rods from Congress, and I wasn't very impressed (although some people really like them). They didn't fit my Sharpmaker very well, and the angles were different on each stone. I had to shim them in the slots to make the angles equal one another. I may of just had a bad batch though. Lately, I've been using the sandpaper method with 3M Wet/Dry Silicon Carbide sandpaper. I cut he sandpaper into strips and wrap it around the stones. Then I use simple office binder clips to hold the paper in place. The setup works well for me, but I don't do too much reprofiling.

The polishing stones from Congress are going to have some slop in the sharpmaker, and this will translate to a greater angle than the sharpmaker stones if you don't take measures to correct that, however if you pull them together, the slop can work in your favor, giving you just slightly less of an angle than the regular stones.
