was gonna get the diamond rods from spyderco for my sharpmaker because i let my kitchen knives get DULL before i sharpen them and was having to start out on a norton stone then go to the sharpmaker when i got it starting to take an edge, read on the forum about wrapping the dark coarse rods with coarse sandpaper for initial sharpening of DULL knives and decided to give this a try.
got some paper (60 grit) and cut to size and wrapped it around the stone and secured with rubber bands. got 4 DULL kitchen knives started, and the paper is still ok, but wont last much longer, and talk about faster than the std coarse stones! much much faster. and cost like $2.50 or so. lots cheaper than the diamond stones. only down to it is the mess the sand made coming off the paper, but thats no biggie. and again, works MUCH faster than the std rods. will really help come deer season, my knives are always dull then.
a good idea, thanks a bunch whoever i heard that from........
