About 2 minutes ago, I accidentally dropped one of the white rods on tile floor

The rod hit the ground, and I was expecting to see 2 pieces, but I only saw one. There was a ringing sound that lasted about 10 seconds (or what seemed like). I examined the rod and was surprised and relieved to see that it was in one piece with a very, very minor ding in the flat side for fishing hook sharpening.

The rods are either tougher than I expected, or I just got lucky

they are thougher than they look, I used to handle them very carefully, but they can take some hits. Don't repeat it though :)

Yikes...I have had that happen before with a different system and now I am super careful with my spyder rods. I put them away in the box when I am not using them every time. You have to be careful with a 1 year old kitten in the house.

I accidentally did the same thing yesterday with a 701 profile white stone... It survived:D I think I've sprouted a couple more grey hairs though...

Spyderco's ceramic is much more dense than any other ceramic I've dealt with. I did break a 701 Profile stone once but it really hit a concrete floor very hard. However it broke just about perfectly in half. So now I've got a pair of 702 fine stones:o :D

I've dropped about 4 of the 204 sharpmaker stones and I've yet to have one of them break on me. But it's like brother Zyhano said: "Don't Repeat It"

But that's true with any sharpening stone regardless what it's made of.

I heard a rumor on one of the knife forums about 3 years ago. One guy said that Spyderco had gotten that particular ceramic from a defense contractor who did a lot of work for the government. If my memory serves me well I think it was here on BF that I read that.

It's a good job you didn't accidentally the whole sharpmaker. :p:thumbup:
