Sharpmaker stone issue

So I've had the sharpmaker for a bit now. Enough to sharpen a few different knives a few different times, maybe a dozen uses. My medium stones are just fine, but one of the fine stone have a couple nicks that catch the knife when using the corners on the way down, and the extra fine that I've only used 2-3 times on of them is nicked pretty badly where it catches my knife hard. It's gotten to the point where the knife I just sharpened got a bit duller after switching from the medium to fine grits. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Or any fixes? I really enjoy the Sharpmaker it works very well and I wish to continue to use it for a long time but I hope I don't have to buy new stones :/

It's common for the stones to have small bumps in them. If they bother you either switch to a different side or contact the dealer you bought it from.

Mine are the same, the corners aren't totally flat. There are some that are good though, it's just a matter of finding the good corners before I sharpen.

You can try rubbing two similar (fine on fine etc.) stones together, sometimes they're minor imperfections that come right out.

If the nicks or catches are depressions into the ceramic (or voids created by chipping), you might contact Spyderco to see if they'll replace them. If there are 'bumps' above the flush surface of the hone, sometimes those can be very gently burnished away, either by rubbing the rods together, or lightly filing them off with a diamond hone (I've done this). If the bumps are too big, or don't burnish away, again you might get in touch with Spyderco about replacing them. Could easily be a quality defect, and therefore a warranty issue.

Thanks guys. I tried rubbing them together like Sal shows in the instruction video to break them in but it didn't do too much, if it becomes an issue where sharpening becomes a hassle I'll contact spyderco about it.

I kinda wanted to see if other people experienced the same thing, good to know I'm not the only one haha I just don't want to have to scrub the stones more often because the one or two good corners are dirty already ya know?

Go to harbor freight and buy the 3 pack of diamond "stones" for $10. Use one of them to lightly dress the bumps off all surfaces of your stones. Not too heavy or they won't cut as well.

You'd be surprised how many uses that cheap set of HF stones are good for.
