Anybody use the Ultra Fine hones?

Is there really much difference in the results from the standard fine hones that come with the Sharpmaker?

Yes, there is a big difference that helps in refining the edge.
Others will state abrasive sizes here, but if the sharpmaker is your only system it will definitely help you get sharper edges

I have found for me it makes a difference. The EF Ceramic is about 3 micron I have read, when it was discussed in other posts.
Try it you'll like it. :D

I have been debating on the EF stones also. Currently, I am doing coarse work on a Lansky or 8 inch Washita stone and then progressing to the Sharpmaker.

I follow up on that with stropping with green compound on cardboard and then on to HA 1 micron diamond spray on a piece of basswood. That combination has afforded me hair whittling, tree topping performance with certain steels....1095 carbon for the most part.

Still, I am watching the prices on the EF hones on that certain site and notice that they go for reasonable prices. I have heard nothing but positive reviews on them and may pull the trigger on a set around Christmas.

I have a pile of stones. The only ones I use are my course, fine and extra fine sharpmaker stones. I only use them freehand and the work great. The extra fine is a noticeable difference. I would like to get a diamond sharpmaker rod but dont need 2 maybe someone will split a set with me. :D

I bought a single UF rod from belote on a certain auction site. You might try to see if they have the single diamond rods as well.

ETA... They are good stuff, IMO. If you've lost some of the bite on a very sharp blade, they make a quick way to get some/all of it back.
