Sharpmaker versions

I'm ready to buy a Sharpmaker. Are there different versions? Specifically, were there improvements made over time? The reason I ask is because a local knife dealer has one but the package looks very old. I do not see a model number on it anywhere (looking for a "204MF"). It did say "Tri-Angle Sharpmaker".

The teenager at the counter said it had been there as long as he could remember. He couldn't offer any other details.

Thanks for any help.

My dealer had an "old" style and a "new" (204) style when I bought several weeks ago. The old one he had looked similar but had only one set of holes to hold the stones at one angle (40 degrees?). The new style (204) had 2 sets of holes on top for settings of 30 and 40 degrees. I went for the new one and am pleased. Also the new one comes with a good video, I think the old one did not have that.

SAK,

I believe that the older one should have a "203" marking, and not "204". Plus, if I recall correctly, the 203 came with a bag to put the base into, while the 204 has a black plastic cover. Also a videotape should be included with the 204, but not the 203.

Hope that helps,

Matthew

The OLD version only included the bag when the model that had the diamond slipcovers was purchased. The other variations did not have the bag . . . if my memory serves correctly! Mine has the slipcovers AND the cordura bag.

Sal G. had stated some time back that the cross section measurements of the older 203 and the current 204 triangle rods are different. The current 204s are a wee bit larger. Ergo, the diamond sleeves of yesteryear will either not fit the current 204s or will make for a tight fit. The latter is the case for my Sharpmakers. So I use the 203 rods in the 204 base. Keep in mind though, that there will be a subtle difference in the actual sharpening angle.

Carlos has mentioned that the sleeves are due in 6 months. :(
