I cannot seem to get a good edge using a spyderco sharpmaker on my rc-3. Granted I just got the sharpener yesterday but, I have put a razor sharp edge on my edc blade which is a boker jim wagner reality folder. Anyone have the same problem or any suggestions? I'm using the 40 degree side. Any other sharpening methods would be appreciated...thinking I should just stick with an oil stone?

Try marking the edge with a sharpie so you can see if you're actually sharpening the edge, or just grinding away at the shoulder.

This
thread has more detailed information about it.

Be sure and wash the stones as they load up with metal, or they won't be sharpening well. BonAmi, Comet, Ajax, etc and some 3M Scotchbright pads work well.

When I first got mine the thickness of the coating made the coating rub on the stones instead of the edge. I used a file to lightly thin it out near the edge and the problem was solved. :)

Check out the thread (above), its from this forum. Its a sharpening discussion with a lot of helpful hints and tips. My favorite, color in the metal blade edge with a marker (sharpie) and as you sharpen freehand or use the SM, marker comes off & its easy to see where your making contact with the stone. It works well, try it. Good luck & don't forget to strope, makes a difference!!!
