Hey folks,
does anyone know if a sharpmaker could handle a titanium knife, specifically some of the beta titanium type dive knives that are out there now, I just loaned mine to a buddy so he could sharpen his, and not until afterwards did I think to ask what material it was. I found out it is titanium. Will it hurt either the sharpener or the knife, I'm also curious since my personal dive knife is titanium and could use a good edge as well.

My understanding is Ti is relatively soft, so yes you can probably sharpen it, but you will probably get a sticky burr that's somewhat harder to remove.

Your only risk is that ceramic rods may not be very efficient and you may load your rods with some titanium residue. Clean your rods with sink cleanser and water before you start (for better honing) and afterwards (to clean out titanium). I think you may want to do most of your work with the edges (rather than the flats) of your coarser, brown, rods. Diamond would work better.

I have found it difficult to remove Ti from ceramic hones, much more so than steel. They will sharpen them fine, as noted the burr forms easily, very light passes are needed on the final honing.
