OK, here is my problem, I got a S1 a week ago adn it was startig to lose it's edge so today I decided to take a ceramic stick to get the edge back up istead, it just chewed the edge, so I went to try to get that out now, it is not shaving sharp.

OK, here is my point do any of you feel it has to be shaving sharp to make a good woods knife?

Thanks in advance,
Eric

Not really,a knife needs to be sharp but few blades hold a shaving edge for long.I try for a shaving edge when sharpining, just for the satisfaction but I don't always keep them shaving,If you do much cutting that would be a difficult task.

Try the edge on matierial to be cut,if it performs well then it's good.

Whew, ok, well it makes very god fuzz sticks, fillets paper, and whittling well for it's size. Thanks lotoblades.

No, My master hunter isnt shaving, though it scrapes. I dont like a shaving edge only because its kinda weak. I keep a 600 grit finish on my outdoor knives, the only exception is my mora, that is kept with a 2000 grit water stone, very sharp. :D

The sharper the knife the longer the edge will last in general.
Does it _have_ to be shaving sharp? Not necessarily. But we
are talking a VG-10 laminated knife. It should get scary sharp.
Now if it was D2 there's nothing wrong leaving a toothy edge on it, since
it will actually allow it to slice better then a high polished edge.

I don't know your sharpening background so forgive me if I sound
like a dork.

I would take a black perm. marker and color the edge.
Then I would sharpen each side at your preferred angle 10x each side.
From this you can see how it is being sharpened (or how it isn't).
You should be able to see if the rods are sharpening the edge
or just hitting the shoulder. If it is hitting the shoulder
then you'll need to either reprofile or increase the angle you
are sharpening at.

I've pretty much have had to re-profile every knife
I've ever purchased because either both or one side of the edge
was off or they were not at my preferred angle and sharpening it normally didn't accomplish much.

So back to your original question.... it could be 'chewing' the
edge because the ceramic stick isn't making positive contact
with the edge for the full stroke.

Yeah, if its working for ya then you dont have any problems. see, when my master hunter came, it was shaving, but because of its edge geometry, it didn't perform the way I wanted it too. So, now after thinning it out it works freggin awsome. Just as my BK7.

All my knives must be at least "hair shaving sharp", or they're not sharp...and I don't have dull knives. That's just me.

Ok, I guess I mislead myself, after I was done pacing around my backyard, and talking about the problem with my dogs, (I do this when I'm mad :o )
I took it out of it's sheath and tried dtaking off hair, and it worked! I think was just mad to notice.

P.S. Fonly, your stripped Bk7 is freakin sweet!

P.P.S Troop, is your avatar Billy Jack?

I don;t think the knife has to be anything more than you want it to be. But me? I want them all to start out shaving sharp. Don;t think shaving as in shaving your face. I've tried it and my knives will do it, but it isn't pleasant. Use a razor. Think shaving long hair....

If you take that blade, and lightly stroke it down your forearm with the blade at about a 35 to 45 degree angle, it should take the hair off down to clean, bare skin. Try it at various points along the bladelength. Sometimes, you can lick your finger and then wipe your forearm to wet the hairs down a little. It's cheating just a tad but will help you see how well the blade is shaving.

I think "shaving sharp" is a large load of BS unless you plan to live off of arm hair and sliced newspaper. But I seem to be in the minority around here! I'm used to it, though.

Isn't the S1 a full convex grind with convex edge? If so, you will want to sharpen the entire area of the blade by using the mouse pad and W/D sand paper. That keeps the geometry of the blade the same, no matter how many times you sharpen the knife and the knife will be just as sharp after the 1000th sharpening, as when you first got it.

A secondary V bevel will eventually get wider, because the blade thickness is increasing the more you sharpen the knife, which makes for an edge that is difficult to keep sharp.

I don't understand the sharpener chewing up the edge though.

longbow- I use wet dry sandpaper, I think it is just I'm not spending enough time on it, after a couple swipes it is plenty sharp for chopping and such.

Hey Doc....I saw this pic and thought it might remind you of your EDC sharpness.:D

I've read about ceramic sticks chewing up blades on ultra hard steels (vg-10) everyone seems to swear by the sandpaper mousepad trick...I havenot tried it as my f1 is till really sharp I've touched it up a little using a 600 grit diamond stone and pretended like I was trying to take paper thin slices of the stone that seemed to work fine, I also strop it on my belt after each use so that has helped to maintain the original edge.

I talk to my dogs too.
You're OK as long as you don't hear them talking back.
