sharpshooter sheaths for Rat Cutlery

Wow is right.. that is a lot of $$ for a basic pancake sheath. I prefer a sheath I can store the knife in - like the synthetic sheath that came with my RAT Model 4.

I already have one coming to me! Should be here next week, can't wait!!!

Thanks guys! You can store the knife in this sheath as long as it is dry. The waterproofing is a good protectant for the knife as well.

We had a couple issues with the retaining strap, but we have that issue taken care of. If anyone got one of the ones before the update, let me know and we will swap it out.

Also just FYI for a bit you will see a little waterproofing on your knife. That is normal and will go away with use.
I am interested in all the feedback I can get!!

I will say that after days in the jungle the stitching held up fine and the overall construction was good. It has to be the most weather resistant leather sheath I have ever used. On our last trip to the Peru the director of the BNN Productions TV show "Try Before You Die" used one for the RC-4 while in the rain and the sheath had no real wear on the leather or stitching.

:D:D:D When will the episode be aired? Can't find any info on that.

Glad to hear it survived the Jungle.

Our main objective was to build a sheath that could keep up with the RC products. I really believe these can. We have had them drug behind boats, baked in an oven, sealed wet in a plastic bag for long periods of time--all with no harm to the sheath.

Jeff is going to send one down to some of his people that live in the jungle to see how long it will survive. I'm betting it beats the odds!

The sheath looks great, but it doesn't appear to come in a left-hand version, so I'll stick with the stock sheath for now. Aside from that, this sheath looks to my eye a lot nicer than the stock plastic sheath that came with my RC-3. Not that it doesn't work, I just like leather sheaths better.

woooo I just got mine! First thing I noticed, is that it smells like a donut! :D It's gotta be the leather. Anyways, it's pretty sturdy, the belt loop is huge, the firesteel holder is secure, the strap is ok, it will keep the knife in unless you yank it out. I guess all straps are like that. I never had this style of sheath before so I wouldn't know. The drain hole looks like it was just poked into, but it'll work. It looks like there are 4 layers just glued on, but I don't see them coming apart any time soon.

Overall, I really like it.

Glad it arrived safely. It should be an extremely functional sheath. It is modeled after one of the most popular sheaths I have been around and it has some features never before seen....like the cool doughnut smell!

If you have issues with the retaining strap, let me know and we will take care of it. Just wait until you see how it handles water and the harsh environments!

Ok, we're starting to get emails about these sheaths so we thought we would make an "official" statement. I removed the BFs user name from the email that I was responding to:

Here's the deal: we gave our ok to Derrick Bohn (Knives Ship Free) for him
to use the RAT Cutlery logo. We have nothing to do with the design,
manufacture or selling of these sheaths. It is not a RAT Cutlery Company
product and RAT Cutlery does not warranty the product or make any claims
about the product. We did do some short-term testing in the jungle and they
seem to be good sheaths. I have copied Derrick and the sheath maker on this
email. As far as it being "official" then that is not entirely an accurate
statement. If another customer of ours wants to do a leather sheath then we
would allow them to use the logo also as long as the quality was reasonably
good and that it was understood that RAT Cutlery is not endorsing them as
being a RAT Cutlery product. So, since "official" is usually interpreted as
being exclusive then this sheath is not "official." It is exclusive to
Derrick and we gave our "blessings" on him doing the project.

Best regards,

Jeff Randall

I just got mine today too, and it does smell like a doughnut!
It adds a touch of class to a hardworking knife.

Re: the strap.

I imagine it could be difficult to make a retaining strap to hold a knife 100% securely with such a rounded handle drop/"guard". I imagine it'll hold it in fine if held upside down and shaken, which is really what the straps are for.

Just a thought.

Another thought:
[Homer Simpson] Mmmmmmmmm dooooonuts. . . [/Homer Simpson]

derrick,

are the sheaths in the pics the new 'fixed' versions or the original?

I can kind of see where the strap might be a bit 'loose' but the sheaths look fantastic!

Thanks,
Brett
