Shaving face with a Ritter Grip?

I decided to touch up my Ritter Grip today. Got a nice polished edge on it after some stropping. So I wondered what would happen if I took it to the stubble on my face. :) Well, it shaves it off, not comfortably, but it is removing the stubble and I'm trying this DRY. I might go lather up and see what kind of shave I could get. Anyone else ever try taking their EDC to their face for a quick shave? :P

I once shaved in the car on a way to a job interview (my brother was driving) with a Gerber LST. But I was 18 then and my facial hair was much thinner. I could probably do it today with my Microtechs, since MTs have nice, thin grinds and all take a wicked edge. Not that I'd want to though.

I used to shave when I EDC'd a lightsaber, which explains my lack of facial features right now.

I tried shaving my face once with a cuda maxx while driving to work. I got rear-ended. I showed up to work with a blade through my cheek and got a raise for being a badass.

Once while camping I tried my large CS Voyager for a shave. It worked out well, but ended up with a little irritation. It faded quickly enough though. I also tried it with my then brand new CS Trail Guide. Man, what a shave. :D

I'm so glad I've never tried to shave with one of my knives: a 7" blade on a Chris Reeve or Busse might be a bit big.

It's doable, provided you know what you're doing (regarding sharpening your knife, and shaving with a straight edge). Once, when I'd left my Dovo at my girlfriend's place, I shaved using my EDC, which at the time was a Beretta Airlight. That knife is one of the very few I've bought that was truly just a quick strop away from face-shaving sharp. And I always kept it that way.

I definitely wouldn't suggest trying it "dry", though. ;-)

If you're going to make a habit of shaving this way, you ought to invest in a Dovo straight razor. They rock.

Yeah there was a week last year when I forgot to bring my shaver up to school so ended up shaving with a rollock and the cricket.. ended up using the cricket more because it was sharper but boy was it not comfy

I have a couple of Dovo straight razors in my razor collection. I know how to shave with a straight razor and is why I tried shaving with a knife. :)

Oh, yeah. Most definitely. I have a pretty thick beard also, and I can't even imagine trying to shave my face dry.

Just the thought of it gives me razor burn. ;-)

Ah, that's cool, then.

Shaving with a bare blade is tough enough with a good straight razor and some careful practice. . . I'd hate to think of the result from someone trying to shave with a regular knife their first time!

If you really wanna see something strange, though, I actually saw video footage of a guy shaving with an Axe! The guy behind Razor Edge Systems[1] does it to show off his sharpening skill. I saw a recording where someone picked a random (dull) axe from a pile, then in about 5 minutes, he lathered up and started shaving with it.

I have to admit, it was rather impressive. I think I'll stick to my straight razor, though! ;-)

I did it once with a Laguiole. Had to touch up an area I missed. Not too bad, as long as you keep your knife sharp.

Hehe, yeah, I believe that's the picture on the front cover of his book. :) I think he puts a pretty thin edge on the axe when he shaves with it.

I had a 40 degree edge on the Ritter Grip and it shaved. I don't know what kind of angle is on my straight razors, 14-20 degrees total or less? I guess it would be easy to figure out with a protractor.
