Okay, I got bored last night and there was a barrette nearby and I started to wonder if it was possible to sharpen the end of the barrette where it hooks into the clasp. It's a part of the barrette that doesn't come in contact with fingers and it could be replaced with the same part from another barrette so I figured it couldn't hurt to try. I only sharpened it on the inside edge, which is the part facing the camera in the pic below.
I'd been stropping knives earlier and was still in the mood to sharpen something. So I first ground an edge on it using a diamond rod. Used a magnifier to see when I had the edge right then stropped the critter. But it wasn't really sharp. I had to go to the diamond rod a couple more times to thin it a bit more. Then I stropped it until it was, believe it or not, shaving sharp. I bet it's got the edge retention of peanut butter, but I bet you could slash someone once or twice with it and they certainly wouldn't be expecting that. A tactical barrette? SD barrette? Yes, I know, I'm nuts.
