I guess this is as good a place to post this as any... Who out there uses a straight razor, and how do you like it? Where do you go to buy a good one and how much will it cost me. My electric is on the verge of breaking and safety razors just aren't as cool :-)

Thanks,

Gillette Mach 3 all the way man. For the straight razor, this is all that. Three blades, nice clean shave.

Norelco Advantage (the one with the lotion dispenser). I have tried many electric razors and this is the only one I have ever really liked.

I used a Gilette Sensor to clean up around the sideburns.

I have had a few good shaves with a straight razor from a barber. It is relaxing to be horizontal with warm lather on your face (distracting you from the geriatric fellow with the razor at your throat!), but the shave isn't very close really. It is hard to beat the modern disposable blade safety razor for closeness. Mt electric is not as close but it doesn't irritate my skin as much either.

My 2 cents...

I hope you can excuse me for taking advantage of this opportunity to mention that I have a Rolls Razor in good working condition that I'm looking to sell. Let me know if you're interested.

I know it's sort of off the topic of straight razors, but count me in with the Mach 3. It's rare you can point to an actual improvement in a kind of mature product, but this one really is better.

Any makers doing custom straight razors?

I saw a perrin custom razor on Blade art at one point, but it was described as a fighter, so I don't know if it was intended for shaving :-) I use a gillete sensor excel and an old remington electric. I have no problem with how the safety razor shaves, but straight razors are just cool:

i agree with the mach 3 comments. It really is a very good razor, despite the fact that you pay close to 2 bucks per blade. This is somewhat offset by the fact that it continues to give a satisfactory shave a good time after a Sensor blade would be useless. This is kind of nice for those of us with heavy beards.

No, safety razors aren't as cool, but they're a lot faster and I'd rather spend that extra 10 minutes in the morning checking email than putting pieces of kleenex on my cuts ;)

Straight razors, Mach 3, Excel...they all SUCK!!!
Ever since I was 15 I've hated shaving. If I shaved for two days in a row, I felt like someone had tried to sandpaper my chin off.

Some time in '99 I finally found out (from a dermatology nurse) about the Bump Fighter razor. It's the only one I will use now. It turns out that my problems were due to shaving too close. The answer is to use a razor that has a thin sheet above the blade, so you do not end up with INGROWN HAIRS!!!

Most of you are probably aware that a lot of black guys have "sensitive skin", get "razor bump", etc. (you've probably seen the depilatory creams sold in one subsection of the shaving section). It's the same problem. It tends to come with the curly hair. The right answer, IMHO, is not to use caustic chemicals, but to use a razor that shaves at just the right distance. (And no, it doesn't look like I have a 5 o'clock shadow right after I shave -- although if I go out, it's a good idea to shave right beforehand.)
Spread the word!!!

No, on a serious issue (at least for me):
Hey johnniet, where can I get one of those?

They say that they ship outside the US. You can probably find a better price--I just looked on Google and took the first one. The starter kit costs $3.25 or so at Wal-Mart in the US.

I don't know whether the "bump fighter shaving gel" brings you anything extra -- I just use their razor.

They're made by the American Safety Razor company; information on "international operations" (including Europe) is at

Let me know if you have any trouble getting a sample.
