Good morning knife nuts. Since my camera was stolen last week, I have been using my Canon scanner to take photos. I worked with textured back grounds today using a bird & trout Damascus made by J/S Shawn Ellis of Mt. View Arkansas, and mike olive J/S also from Mt. View. I would like your feedback on the scanner vs. camera.

I think scanners can be used to good advantage. Not all scanners are created equal tho. If one is puter savvy, I think they could be adjusted to a certain degree to best make a knife image. My first flatbed was set perfect. After that one broke several others were tried with zero to fair success. I stumbled upon some aditional adjustments the other day, but cannot find them now. If you find anything out please post it.

Here is an image I made with my second scanner that I got to work fairly well.

R. Ellis what scanner did you use, and how did you get such a quality photo?
And how did you get such large pictures with a limit of 100kb. Thanks for your feedback.

I wish I could answer your questions. I have the same ones myself. The first scanner I had was an old visionare (spl?) flatbed scanner. I would make a scan and it would open in microsoft photodraw. A couple clicks at sharpness, brightness and contrast, resize and the pics were done. When that scanner broke I went out and bought some model of a copy print scanner. It would not make a decent scan no matter what I would do. I took it back and got another make and model. Same poor results. Took it back and got a refund. The one I am running now is a compaq C 1000 that I bought used for 20 bucks. It is half decent but not like that first one. I don't know what a 100kb limit is. I use the insert image icon in the reply box. I host the pics with the free space provided by my IP. Again, sorry I have no answers, I hope someone who knows will come by and explain how it works and if any scanner can be adjusted for quality knife scans.

Here is an image I did with that visionare I had. I like the rich color and detail it gave me. Wish I could get another like it. I have collected a few more used visionares, but have no cords for them.

The image below was made with the Compaq I have now. While the image is OK, I cannot get it to make a clear, deep, detailed pic like the other one.
