I was quite honored when Shawn decided to name this new design with my initials. It was based on his SFB, so it fit with the naming scheme to name it SJB but it also means a lot to have my initials on a pattern that will surely be purchased by others! This is the first of its kind, an SFB handle with a wharncliffe blade, now called SJB.
I think this entire knife may have been full of firsts for Shawn. He was so accommodating with my requests. He drew several designs up based on what I wanted until we both were happy with the final drawing. The sky was the limit here and it was awesome to see his excitement to try this new design and all these new materials, it only made me more excited to watch it all come to be. He was awesome to communicate with and I look forward to the day when I may get to meet Shawn and really thank him properly.
This is the first knife for Shawn in M390, and it was quite an ordeal getting M390 in the thickness and size we both wanted. He did a lot of work to get the steel and pulled it off and turned out an amazing blade with this steel! The blade finish is great and is going to wear really well. It's also super sharp and glided through some initial paper tests like cutting through air.
This is also the first time he used Ti and then also the first time doing a flame anodized finish to get the blue color I was looking for. The Ti liners turned out amazing and really stand out with a nice bit of color.
I asked Shawn about LSCF and he said that he was willing to try it if I was willing to pony up the cash for the extra expense of these handle scales Of course I said hell yeah dude, let's do it! Looking back maybe I should have stuck to regular carbon fiber, sounded like Shawn had a real time working with this stuff and ended up pulling little bits of wire out of his skin at times! Yikes! I don't know if he'll touch the stuff again lol. In the end the handle scales turned out beautifully, and Shawn and myself were both pleased with the result. The extra expense was worth it to me, I hope it was worth it to Shawn to take a bit of hardship on my behalf! I definitely thank him for it!! I love the Anso sculpting he did on these scales, it's got a nice grip and feels so nice in the hand. The bit of ramp near the front end of the blade makes for such a sure grip where the thumb can really purchase up, it's just so comfortable.
Even the kydex sheath was a special color request of mine and I like how the blue kydex brings out the blue liners. I've got in mounted on a Tek-Lok now and its a great size for horizontal belt carry.
I can't say enough good things about Shawn and his work, when his books open up again y'all better jump in line!
I snapped a couple pics of my own, but the pictures Shawn took really do this knife more justice than my little cell phone camera can do.
