Hey all you ole time heavy hogs, give a little piglet such as myself a early Christmas gift will ya? I was wondering if you could give me some details on the SHBA. Things like when was the first one made, various steels used and when, thickness of the models (blade and the handles & fasteners), A2 vs INFI in this model, any real rare ones out there, and any other historic details that you might think are interesting. Over the past couple months I've taken a real liking to this model and I know it was popular but you just don't hear that much about it as you do like the MS and the SH. Bad Mojo has some good pics but not alot of details like they have on the MS and SH. So if you could fill us less knowledgeable ones in some, it would be greatly appreciated. Don't be shy about throwing up some of your pics either, I know I would love to see em. A special thanks to Wetdog on getting me going on this thread.

What did I do now? I have some SHBA's yes. I have one of the early ones that is purported to have been to the gulf the first time around. It is made of A2 as I recall and it is thick, really thick. I have one like it that is actually crinckle coated and cord wrapped but not as thick and then there are the 1/4 and 5/16" A2 models and some INFI models with solid fasteners and tube fasteners. I haven't got much time for pics these days but I will see what I can do.

If I look through my receipts and shipping records I should be able to find the
Date the last batch of Straight Badgers shipped from the Factory.

Chip, Who has the famous Quad Grind Bought the last Straight Badger sold new at the factory price from a factory Dealer, after the factory ran out.

The first Busse knife to use the Tube type fasteners was a Straight Badger
with a special Widow's Peak Micarta grip, I have a letter from the factory
for authenticity.(Edited to add) Picture number BA23 on BadMojo.
It was sold at the Las Vegas Y2K preparedness show in October or November
1999, to my oldest son, I traded him a sword for it a few years ago.

There were a few(perhaps a dozen) Straight Badgers that were INFI and a true 5/16" and of these some were given special grinds.

I picked up one of these in June of 2000 in Wauseon at a meeting with Jerry and his wife and Dave and his wife at the local Pizza place, a Triple Grind, the Infamous "Fat Bastard"

There are a few A-2 Badgers out there with a Busse Logo on the back of the handle, and several to many A-2 blades sold with Factory Busse Dog Tags.

To look up the dates takes a bit more effort, and I am lazy.

There are INFI Badgers out there with Slotted Screws, and I have been told that there are some with smooth Handle fasteners, I just have not seen them for myself.(The Smooth)

There are A-2 with smooth and with slotted screws.

There are kind of rare A-2 Badgers with Factory Kydex as well as the common Eagle Sheaths.

Andre

Could you post some pics of your SHBA's? You did sometime back, nice collection.

A LOT of what I learned was from very carefully reading your post's on SHBA's over the last few years.

That, and buying every SHBA I could afford. Mostly the smooth and slotted bolt variety.

I'm wearing a fat smooth at the moment. Not a true 5/16's as it's only .293, perhaps INFI as dimples show up when you put a bit of oil on the flats of the tang or ricasso, but with the A2 grinds, so it may be A2. Haven't sent it to the shop to find out.

Don't care. It fits my hand and balances like a custom and it is a perfect size for my EDC. A2 + Jerry's heat treat is okey dokey with me if it is A2. Whatcha gonna do? Break it without a vise and cheater pipe? Not gonna happen.

Just a shame so many of them only get to come out to get their pic taken.

As much as I love the SHSH's, this is truly my "if you could only have 1", Busse.

Rob

Great post guys. Thanks!

Yeah Papathud, if you could post some of the pics of your collection, that would be very cool.

Looking forward to joining one of the ranks of those who own these classic Busses. :D

I took my pictures down off of this site, all of them.

I am down to four Straight Badgers at this time, I think, Two INFI, one the true 5/16
Triple Grind " Fat Bastard with tube type fasteners, and the Proto for the Tube type fasteners.

One A-2 with a Factory Dog Tag and the original Eagle Sheaths cardboard tag, the most perfect example of an A-2 Badger I have ever seen.

And one much more common A-2 with an Eagle sheath.

I sold the others to a couple of folks on this forum.

The Toughest to sell was the one with the Busse Logo on the handle,,,it went to a good home though,,,,and is now with an A-2 Steel Heart with the same Logo in the same location.

The more important knives listed can be seen on Bad Mojo.

(Edited to add) Look at Bad Mojo BA23 all but the middle one with the faint A on it

Like I said, I am lazy.

Tim,

Yes, that is indeed the knife in question, I was pretty proud of that knife while I owned it.

Interestingly enough I am still proud of it while you own it.

Awesome for you to have put together the set of three.

That would be a tough collectable set to ever match, let alone beat.

However, my wife is very pleased with the trade you and I made, she likes "Shiny" Busse knives and says "Hers" is much more likely to see use on any given day.

I got to say that I am proud of you sticking to your search and finding all three.

I am also proud that you found The third one the "Way" I told you to look for Busse knives.

You are truly a credit to the trough.

Motivated, dedicated and goal oriented.(Lucky Too)

Edited to add, I normally do not say on a public forum who I sell the knives to, without the go ahead from the buyer, Some buyers want me to shout it to the world,,,Some want other to not know the sources of the knives.

It was a good trade Tim, While I do indeedy Do miss that knife, getting one that my wife likes and will use puts a smile on her face, and when Mama's "Happy" I get "Happy" too.

I'm not sure I deserve such high praise, but just happen to get lucky and be in the right place at the right time! The three will always stay together and rightly so.

:D

You guys ROCK! Got this copied and off to the Archives. Thanks randucci for posting that awesome trio. What a very nice collection. I'm green with envy. That's a very cool idea, hmmmm, now you got me thinking! Ohhhh what a dangerous thing for me to do.
