I have this old Busse Combat add with the SHBM on the front.

Based on the inside info the SHBM on the front appears to be a "collector's grade" model. I have been searching, and have read that some of the CG SHBMs came with a smooth bolt, but based on what I have read (thanks to papathud, Leatherman, Cobalt and Gravelface) I have not heard of any that had all smooth bolts. Are there any with all smooth bolts?

Are all of the SHBM's the 1/300?

I see some pictures show a more pronounced/squared off clip point, while on others it is not as agressive. Is that just a grinding difference, or is does that show how early/late it might have been made?

I also read in I think papathud's post about the smooth vs. slotted handles indicating age. Are the smooth handles the earlier models?

Thanks in advance.

I've got an article around here somewhere that talks about the first models of the SHBM and how they were tested by Ron Hood. All of those had smooth bolts and handles. An old advertisement also shows the smooth handles and bolts as well.

Never seen one in person, and its believed that only a handful are out there.

I have to get in the shop, I'll let one of the other old timers key you in on the 1 of 300 story, its long but very interesting. :)

I have not seen a combat grade with smooth bolts, but you are correct. Smooth Handles are indicator of earlier released mistresses.

I think this looks like one of the older smooth handled ones, but I am not sure. Trying to figure out a little more about it.

That does indeed look like one of the last of the smooth handle SHBM's. Note the slotted bolts.

The handles are identical to my one remaining SHSH, slotted bolts and all. The slotted bolts indicate a transitional period between the A2 and INFI SHSH's.

That SHBM would be one rare bird indeed, and if its like my SHSH, its one fat chunk of INFI as well. :)

But not THE indicator. The SHBM I have has been verified by Jerry as one of the first 100 and it has slotted screws. I could be wrong but I think there may be a mix of slot/ no slots in the early Mistresses.

Sorry, little confused by your post.

I was referencing the micarta as being smooth indicating an early model. As far as bolts, every CG and 99% of LEs i have seen have slotted bolts.

I was trying to say the early mistresses had smooth micarta, then later transitioned into the partially grooved micarta, and finally ended with the fully grooved micarta.

Can you post a picture so I can see what you mean?

Hey Bob! Good to see you again! Dont see many of the old school around any more. :( Understandable, but I still miss the old crowd.
By the time INFI came to existence they were using both slotted and smooth bolts yes, but the smooth bolts kind of went away very, and I mean very, shortly thereafter. The number of true INFI with smooth bolts I've ever seen I can count on one hand.

Smooth micarta, oh yes, the holy grail of old school Busse. None have felt as good in the hand as my SHSH keeper. Here are two VERY fine examples that I am proud to have owned. My keeper is the coated one.

Good copy....note to self- read and type slower.
The micarta is grooved completly on mine.
Tried to post a pic but I'm a dinosaur with nothing but thumbs. Hope it's clear as mud now;)

I will agree that NOTHING is a 100% "indicator" of age or material. Popular indicator of Infi SHBA Is the slightly radiused plunge line, I have an Infi with the A2 plunge line. We thought all BBSHSHs were A2, but Monte has one marked Infi. Smooth bolts vs Slotted, dimples, grooves.....all just general ideas on time frames.

They were for sale about 15 years ago. Now you have to watch the exchange for any. Busse is releasing a new longer version of the Mistress soon.

Yes, I agree, it feels great in the hand.

My BBSHSH has the smoothest Micarta I have personally felt.

These all feel pretty good in my hand. (sorry about the crappy cell phone pic. I'll get some more pics when the last family member arrives :-) )
