She bit me - BK12's First Blood

So I took a little camping trip last night up in the Catskills with a buddy of mine and brought along the BK12. It had rained a little in the morning so I was skinning the wet bark off some kindling wood and the branch slipped out of my hand mid-stroke. I immediately started to pull the blade back but it was too late, sliced right into my finger, not quite to the bone. After a minute or two of hopping around with my finger in my mouth, I had to choose whether to tough it out for the night or hike the two hours back to the car and go get stitched up. Ultimately decided to hike back as it's been more than 10 years since my last tetanus shot.

5 stitches later here are the results:

And here is what I found on my blade when I took a look at it later:

How many times have you been Becker-Bitten?

Nice! Hurt like a son of a gun I bet!

I have been fairly lucky, the only cuts I have received have been playful nibbles, no outright bites. Glad you got it squared away though, things like that can go bad quick if you ignore them.

I've been nibbled a few times here and there, but this is the first time I've really been bitten too. I had gauze and antibiotic cream on it inside a minute or two, but it was bleeding like hell and I had been using the knife all over the place, so no telling what had managed to get inside the laceration. Figured missing out on one night of camping was worth not getting an infection and losing a finger.

The blood splatter in the bottom pic is awesome!

That's what I thought too! The larger red mass at the bottom shows how deep she went in.

Surprisingly other than the initial bite it doesn't hurt. The spot on my arm where they gave me the tetanus shot hurts more than my finger does. Though I will say that when they injected the local anesthetic into the sliced area that did hurt like a you-know-what.

Looks like you almost DE- Barked your finger! Ouch!
to bad about your trip buddy!

I have only cut myself three times with knives, real cuts not nicks. Once with my first folder (Uncle Henry) at age 10, a couple 3 months ago on my Mora and this week with my new BK4.

you can see the old scar on my left hand (base of thumb) from the Uncle Henry

I did myself a good one the first day I had my BK 2. I was trying to run it through a ceramic rod sharpener and the blade was so thick I had to push really hard... well my finger happened to be right where the blade was when when it finally cleared the sharpener. Now I have a sweet Becker scar and luckily I also still have my finger.

Still got your left pointer finger all wrapped up? I saw it in some of the pics you've posted in the last week. Finger doesn't hurt, but damn if the loss of the use of that finger isn't annoying!

I had the nurse at the ER laughing at me while she bandaged me up, told her to go light on the gauze 'cuz it was my nose picking finger :)

yeah, still have the penis-head bandage lol

today was first day I could do much at all with that hand. I didnt wanna blow the wound open again, we didnt stitch it, just used steri-strips.

Ouch! This is a thread full of pain.

I feel lucky that I haven't managed to cut myself with one of my Beckers yet. Well, I did slightly cut my tongue while licking A-1 off my Eskabar, but it wasn't bad at all and healed in a day or two. I'm just waiting for a serious wound of some kind while modding my knives. I'll bet I do something horrible when I finally decide to mod my Machax. It's already ripped open the finger of a friendly Tongan who didn't understand the meaning of "you shouldn't choke up on it. There's no choil." I just know that reverse curve is there, watching, waiting...for me...

Alright that just sent shivers up and down my spine. I know how sharp my 14 is, I couldn't imagine touching my tongue to that edge...

Ouch! I've had a few good bites over the years but never bother getting stitched. I always wonder why peoples first instinct is to put their finger in their mouth? Hello instant germ bath.

There is an actual reason behind the instinct. Our saliva contains a protein called histatin which besides killing bacteria promotes rapid wound-closure. Ever notice that injuries inside your mouth heal much faster than elsewhere?

Still probably right though, but it is hard to deny that instinct especially since the finger was in my mouth before I had fully realized what had happened.

Thats pretty interesting stuff!
I have had first aid training..so I guess I lost that instinct. I opened the pads of 2 fingers on my left hand last month. I shard of Marble was stuck in some plaster on a job site...I had just finished assisting my marble counter top guy, installing the counter. I looked down and thought, hey look, dirt on the wall. I swiped my hand down the wall, and instantly realized what had happened....broken stone is SHARP! I applied pressure and got out of the house fast...to much nice stuff in there for me to bleed all over the place!
Wasn't to bad, but I had a hand full of blood by the time I got to the truck.

My first knife wound was when I was 11 or 12. I still have the SAK that I did it with....(I know this is a long post sorry...but this is a spine chilling wound)
I was sitting on my bed, cutting my toenails with the scissors on the SAK, and lost my balance...I stabbed the scissors into my Achilles heal! Man..there is some serious nerves down there!!! Lets just say, I was one seriously freaked out kid! I could see the tip of the scissors under the skin of the other side of my ankle.

3 bites, only 2 serious enough to consider stitches.

First was the first time Helga went camping, I had planned a Wilderness Survival/Backpacking shakedown for our trip to the Everglades, and my Crew backed out, my Scoutmaster decided that he would use the reservation and still do the backpacking portion, and without telling anyone else, decided we would do an extra 6 miles without our packs after we setup camp, so the daylight I had intended to use for practicing my shelter building and fire making skills was gone, so I said to hell with it, I'm gonna do my shelter. While I was working on gathering suitable material for my shelter in the dark, I missed the wood while trying to reduce it's length and almost reduced the length of my thumb by about an inch... After I played medic for myself I decided a tent would do. The next day my parent's and I spent the whole day looking for an urgent care open on a Sunday afternoon, when we finally found one it was too late for stitches, so they just glued it and gave me a "splint" made from foam and a piece of rubber painted to look like metal.

Second was Becca, I was doing some weird sex knots on her for a paracord wrap just to see how it would feel in my hand, my upper right thigh learned how sharp the factory edge was.... One inch deep, so I also got the full width of the blade, this was a Tuesday just before my Boy Scout meeting, so I have a pair of green cargoes with a hole in the thigh and a blood stain around the hole. When we got to the urgent care, the doctor to a little too much pleasure in stapling it.... This bit was opening back up once a week until last week.

The third was me fondling a folder, folder slipping, and me forgetting it wasn't a piece of Chinese crap.

Blood goes great with Beckers! After messing around and doing enough chopping and batoning to open up a couple wounds, I managed to slice open two fingers cleaning off the blades, first with the 2 and then with the 12. Great edge retention!

Nice one! And you're damn right about the edge retention. I had been chopping and battoning the hell out of some wood with the 12 immediately prior to my bite. The Dr who stitched it up commented on how smooth and clean the cut was.
