She could have used a knife...

She broke two fingers trying to free the dog. Finally the collar broke; everyone is OK.

Honestly, a knife would've been zero help there. With the dog shoved up against the elevator door and flailing about in a panic, she would've cut the dog and herself more than the collar or leash, if she even had the presence of mind to go for her knife in that sort of panicky moment.

Something to keep in mind if this ever happens to you is that elevator motors are strong. They can lift several tons - no dog leash is going to slow it down if it's caught between the doors when the elevator wants to move. The leash will break the instant the elevator moves, and you just need to help support the dogs weight so it doesn't choke until the door opens again, freeing the last shreds of leash caught in the interior set of doors.

If it were up to me, I'd feel much better having the option of cutting the leash/collar than waiting for the leash to break. Going for a knife in a panicky moment... isn't that one of the reasons why we carry?

It's really not an option, unless you're okay risking cutting your dogs throat and face. Unless you're fast enough to cut the leash before the elevator moves, it'll be too late to try it.

Dunno, if it was a choice between some lacerations vs. a dead dog... Obviously things worked out this time.

New idea with no knives involved. If you're gonna take your dog(s) on an elevator, PAY SOME ATTENTION and don't let the leash get caught in the door. I'm sure it was an accident but it's still true.

Generally people don't think fast enough, only panick fast enough. A knife would have helped for about 7 seconds and then it was useless.

For one of us, a knife may have been a solution. For someone who doesn't often use one or doesn't carry one, probably not. And even still the backlash after the dog was freed could have caused damage as well.

Fetzer is on the right track...that was pretty stupid in the first place but she reacted well I give her that.

Seriously, what's with people these days? They need to learn to mind their surroundings a little better. I'm glad the dog's ok. He walked it off like a champ.

Though not as serious, a similar situation happened to me a few months ago.

I was at my friends house for new years, and they are vets so they have four dogs, five cats, and a bird. They have a huge fake christmas tree with no ornaments, as the cats like to climb up the tree to play with them. They do however have lights on it. So we are sitting down watching tv, when one of their cats climbs up. It gets tangled in the lights somehow, and they form almost a knot around it's neck. So the cat's struggling, only making the lights tighter, as my friend tries to calm it down and wiggle it free. My knife was out of my pocket and open in a second and I was over to cut through the lights. Luckily, I didn't have to use it and he got it free somehow.

I was carrying a KC exclusive XHP native BTW.

This video reminded me of one of those "I'm SO glad I've got a knife" moments we've all had. An inexperienced vet tied horses the wrong way for transport, they got panicky in the trailer because of a sudden maneuvre and got all tangled up. Nobody else had a knife, I was carrying a fixed blade and managed to free the animals quickly and calm them down.

Working with a sharp blade around scared animals isn't nice, though.
