Shearing a hide .

I have a piece of buffalo rawhide . It is stretched taut on a picture frame . Dry and as flat as I,m likely to get it . It is a september hide and so the short hair of summer is shedding and unsightly . That is the back of the picture to be and so is relatively unimportant . It is a little ugly and the friend who will paint the picture won,t like to see tufts of hair even on the back of the : Canvas : .

I don,t want or need to remove it . I would like to trim it down a little and cut off any hair that sticks out the sides . If I purloin the family electric barbering shears I am likely to be in need of an old time barbers services .

I don,t want to purchase electric shears that I may not use again for a long time . Nor do I wish to go the traditional route of soaking and scraping or even modern chemicals .

You can dry scrape a skin to remove hair.

Scissors maybe?

If you carefully use one of your razor-sharp knives you might be surprised at what you can do (like a 12 inch slash through the hide).

You could always make an appointment at the beauticians for a bikini wax.

Oooh boy thats a bad one . I might try the scissors or sharp knife approach Coote . This hide may be thicker than you are used to . You would not easily cut through it with a knife when dry . They were used for the sides of shacks when wood was hard to come by .

I think your scissors idea may be the way to go .

Me boys ? The last time I dry scraped was when I ran out of shaving cream . L:O:L
I have actually been using hand soap for about two months .

I,ll check out that site . I may use a modified method as it doesn,t have to be hair free and it will never be seen . This is mostly for the lady artists sensibilities .

Please Coote ? Don,t suggest I do a wax job on it . L:O:L

Hey Kevin...
Maybe a CRAZY thought,,and not sure how it would work..

But...

What about burning it off ??

You could do a controlled burn,,maybe with a BurnZomatic ??

An idea,, anway....

Normark . Do this outside so your wife will still love you . Take a tuft of your hair cut it off and light it . Smell the pleasant aroma ? Multiply that by several thousand times and add a big stinky buffalo butt into the equation .

Just in case you don,t want to do this I will tell you burning hair stinks so bad that you would clear your house with a handful . Buffalo hair is stink on steroids .
Thanks for the suggestion though .

Hey Kevin....

Ohhhh Boy..
I know that all too well...

I Didn't say it would be Fun !!!

I can't even be in the same room when antler or bone is put to the grinder..Just makes me want to Barf!!!

You get the same sort of smell once and awile at the Dentist..
My eyes get as big a silver dollars!!!

You could always do it in a stiff wind!!!!
LOL

Thanks

Eric I kinda sensed you were aware of its pungent nature . (Ferocious might describe it better . )

I have a feather burner I made which is a hot wire to cut a shape into the feather fletching on arrows . I use it with impunity in the house with only mild discomfort while the house empties of occupants . Bone and antler do not phase me at all and I actually like the smell of burnt bone .(to a degree)

Burnt bison butt is another thing altogether . L:O:L

I like messing around with rawhide. I get mine from the pet store, those big hard chewy toys. Soak it in a tub of hot water, unwrap it, flatten it. Cut it with a knife when wet, or let it dry and cut it with a coping saw or bandsaw. Wet it again, tie or wrap things up with it, it dries as hard as plastic. It's like Kydex. (just my experience) I've got a new homemade knife that is very sharp and I'm going to use rawhide as a liner for the leather sheath.
I also like deer sinew, used it for tying the leading ends of my very basic fletchings, used it for tying other things.

Coldwood we will have to trade pictures of fletchings once I get off my lazy backside .

Hunting season now . Get yourself a deer hide and scrape it , stretch it out and you have enough rawhide to last you years . It takes a little muscle power and not much more .

Muscle power? Now you're starting to scare me. LOL. My fletchings are anything but pretty. But they work. I shoot dowels from the hardware store. I paint them screaming orange so I can find them in the grass. Fortunately there is a bait and archery shop nearby where I can by red, yellow and white feathers for fletching (also for easy finding). I've tried twice to make a self bow, snapped them both. Now I shoot used laminated recurves.
