Im looking to get a knife to carry with me all the time, sleeping, in the shower, swimming, etc, and I need to think of some way to carry it. It would have to be independant of clothing/belt, and all I could come up with was either something that strapped to my arm, or a neck sheath.
something strapped to my arm would be inconvenient in short sleeves, may not be comfortable, and would be kinda impractical in teh shower(would have to take it off to clean underneath, which would kinda defeat the purpose of having it)
about the best i can think of is a neck sheath, but I dont really care for things around my neck(I may be able to get used to it) and Im a little concerned about sleeping with it around my neck, or tyring to swim with it around my neck.

does anyone have any suggestions for other carry options, or solutions to the neck sheath concerns I have?
If anyone else has a knife they carry with them all the time, Id love to hear how you do it.

thanks in advance, all advice and info will be greatly appreciated
thanx

I carried a CS Mini Pal on a chain around my neck for several years. Kinda crummy knife, but it was very rust resistant, had a secure but open sheath that let water drain out, and was so small I hardly noticed it. Came in handy on countless occaisions when I wasn't dressed enough to have a "real knife."

The 24-7 neck-knife is doable idea, and I can't think of anywhere else you could carry a knife easily in all conditions and states of dress. But the knife must be very small so as not to be uncomfortable (not just in "daily wear" but if you roll over onto it at night), the sheath must be absolutely secure, and the whole package should be reasonably waterproof (sheath drains easily, knife is stainless and in a high polish). This is definitely a "little something sharp" knife, not a primary carry for utility or defense.

For 24/7 I carry a Spyderco Ladybug on a cord around my neck.

Perfect! for me.

To carry the knife everywhere every day it has to be small. If it folds, it is even smaller.

The ladybug is perfect for all kinds of stuff. It can be easily reached sitting down, when laying down. It has no weight. You will never know it's there till you want it.

I like a simple, and moderately tight fitting slip sheath with a parachute cord or chain loop. You can wrap the loop around a belt and or beltloop, put the knife in your pocket or tuck it under your belt, or in your waistband. You can carry it around your neck, as long as the sheath is tight enough for inverted carry, and you can put an arm through the loop for an inverted kinda armpit carry. This is the way I carry my litte 3" tactical fixed-blade, and it works great. Should work great for almost any knife under 4".

ryk,
I agree with Corduroy, Neck carry seems like the only way to carry a knife 24/7. That is to fit the criteria you had mentioned.

If you don't want to carry around your neck, about the only thing you could do is carry under your arm. Use the cord/chain, and figure 8 it across your back. It keeps the cord/chain from around your neck. Just an idea.

thanx for the input, i appreciate it.

Ive got a couple neck knives lying around, Im going to try playing with the sheaths a bit and see what I can do with them.
If I do decide to try this, I think I would want to get something in ceramic or talonite for the corrosion resistance.

again, thanks to everyone for their responses.

honestly, i havent given it that much thought, its just something ive been toying with the past week or two, i think it stemmed from trying to open a package of soap in the shower(one where they wrap the plastic around the cardboard) I did get it open, but betwixt my wet hands, a half awake me, and an exceptionally well wrapped package, a knife would of helped a lot.
and a couple other times when im in various states of dress and could of used a knife.

I do want a the knife to have a handle, otherwise Ill cut myself everytime I use it

skeleton would probabally be fine, since the knife would probabally see minimal use, carry comfort would take priority over useage comfort, and something that doesnt print much or get in the way whilst wearing it would be preferable. thin slabs would be fine as well.
but im not sure if i can get used to carrying something around my neck, so im going to try that first before I actively search for a knife to fulfill this role.

again, thanx for the input everyone.

ryk,
You might want to try this, if you cant deal with the neck carry.

The "Protek Ring"

They make a ring with a concealed blade inside that comes out when pressure is applied to the front of the ring. It is a nice ring and is 100% waterproof. It comes in sterling silver or gold plated.

The only problem is I am not sure if the company is still in business. I ordered the ring 4 years ago from an add in a "Karate International" mag.

Give it a shot, you never know.

P.S. If anyone calls the #, please post if they are still in business or not. Thank you.

I think the best way to effect 24/7 carry is to follow Steve Harvey's lead.

Get one knife and sheath/s that fit all modes. Strap it to you leg, around your neck at night and in the shower. To your belt during the day, etc.

A well designed Kydex sheath with good attachments including elastic should be able to keep pace, but even if you have two sheaths, then it is with you all the time.

I did just that with a Moran for quite awhile, now I need another one.

I' ll go with what Steve said. I' ve been carrying an Emerson La Griffe for a good time now. It is totally comfortable, concealable, lightweight and secure to the draw due to the finger hole cutout, even in wet and soapy conditions. I' ve already done this several times but now hang it on the cabinet knob only a foot away. It is reasonably corrosion resistant because of the black coat over 154cm stainless with an occasional wipe of the Tuff cloth. Sleeping with it presented no problem but for those who find it a concern, a ball chain type which I find uncomfortable, is probably a safer way to go. Imagine being strangled by someone during sleep!

thanx all, i think im going to give it a try, i just have to locate some of my chain/paracord so I can try out different lengths and see what works.
I was thinking about moving one from belt sheath to neck sheath depending on my state of dress, but I think I would rather go with just straight neck carry so I cant forget to move the knife when I change or whatever.

Just one word of warning about any cord you put around your neck. Make sure you don't use any material, like paracord, that can turn into a garrot and strangle you, either accidentally or by an adversary. Test whatever material you plan to use [the first test should NOT be on your neck] A breakaway chain is what I prefer, but that may not be suitable for alll the carry options Steve suggested. Bud Nealy's multicarry system[there are others] gives you the flexibility to vary your carry. Brian Tighe's neck knives sheaths offer almost as much flexibility.

What about a Spyderco folder (Endura/Delica/something to that effect) in a River City neck sheath? When clothed, you can use the neck sheath or the pocket clip. When swimming, just take it out of the neck sheath and clip it to your trunks. Wear the neck sheath when you're nekkid

I have a Polkowski Gaunt on order. It will be my home knife for when I can't wear a belt. I plan to wear it while exercising. Not sure about the shower yet. I have also thought about wearing it when I sleep.

Is it safe to wear a neck knife to bed? Or is there a significant risk of the knife coming out of the sheath? I'll have to see how my wife reacts to it.

Axel

Try ball chain rather than paracord. If you wear the knife in the shower, any fibrous material will trap water and take a long time to dry, marking up your clothes in the process. Ball chain should be light enough to break under an strain serious enough to endanger you.

Depends on ones wife!

And even stainless ball chain will rust.

Perhaps a very thin leather cord is a good compromise both in strength and security. The same ones that are sold with jewelry neck pendants. IME, ball chains and/ or paracord that are visible indicates something else aside from jewelry. There are plus and minuses.
