Can I use a boot leather conditioner to maintain the sheath for my HI blade? It is black and I have leather conditioner for my black boots called Scott boot care oil. I don't want to damage anything and any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone

I've used mineral oil on the black, wood framed sheaths for years without any problem. However, mineral oil may soften leather and possibly stain lighter colors. I have a brown leather sheath that Koster made for my HI Bowie knife that I put mineral oil on and it stained it made the sheath less "rigid" than originally.

I would also think that any good shoe polish or oil would work fine. I use the mineral oil on everything because I have 20 or so khuks and mineral oil is cheap and easy to use and doesn't smell.

I have a piece of that buffalo hide I removed from an old sheath and its been soaking for a few years at least. I was going to make a wallet out of it but forgot about it. It never got soft. Forget fading out the black dye. Whatever they use is permanent stuff. You are right about the lighter colored leather tho. It will darken a bit but if you apply it evenly all over it will look just fine.

The leather on the scabbards are very thin, I normally use a leather conditioner called Montana Pine pitch blend, I use it on the sheaths I make, but I also use saddle soap in paste form, like shoe polish. It will keep the leather supple and prevent cracking. The saddle soap is much cheaper than the other and will do a fine job.
