Hi all,

I am putting this one out there in the hope that one of the good leather sheath makers might be able to provide me with a bit of a tip. I have been making sheaths now for a good number of months and wish to decorate them a little more. There is an effect I have seen on a number of sheaths which looks like a bunch of little dots in random patterns that some makers use that I REALLY love.

Heres a good example.

I note it was also used to great effect on the Stormcrow/wasteland project (damn I loved that Golok).

I will not be using any advice offered to go into making sheaths for sale - I only make sheaths for my own use or the use of friends in my country. I would have done a search on the effect but I don't even know what it is called.

Many thanks in advance if you can offer a pointer on how to achieve this.
Cheers,
Arma

Tsk, tsk, tsk, asking for mine and Magnussen's secrets :P

This is the stamp we use. Feel free to experiment with how you use it, as well as using alternatives :)

Never mind the tooling on the sheath, I really like the way Magnussen wrapped that handle :D
That's an art worth learning.

Thanks guys I am in awe of the wasteland/crow project. I really really liked the work done. I could never do anything this good and its a promise that I will never ever use the skill to make stuff for sale.

Thanks also to Sheathmaker for providing me with more tool information. In Australia there are not many leatherworkers to be located to teach spiffy tricks so I have to learn on my own. Yeah I also really love the epoxy soaked hemp handles - but such a skill is WAY ahead of me. I just have to save money so I can buy that sort of thing by makers here. I am buying a house soon and hope to set up a backyard forge - I really get into the whole primitive/tribal bladeware thing.

Again I am in your debt.

I'm glad that you liked it, and don't worry about making something similar to sell--I haven't told you how to do it, so if you figure it out then I can't really tell you not to sell it :)

Cheers Noah - I doubt anything I could ever make would be anywhere near the finish you achieve. I really dig the style though :).

As an aside here, anything I tell you, show you, or assist you with in any way, is freely given by me and becomes your personal intellectual property and you can do with it as you choose, including selling whatever you want, where ever you want. Since 1951 a lot, no most of what I know, I learned from others. There's not a great deal that is "new", just re-discovered from time to time.

So take anything you get from me and use it ,and count on me to applaud your success if you make a huge profit from it.

So pretty much anything can be used as a stamp eh? You just have to have a decent grade of leather for it to work I guess. Thanks Paul thats very kind of you. In Australia sheaths are pretty bog standard so it would be nice to be able to produce something a bit more unique. Mind you I am not taking away from our makers - they sweat just like anyone else but the work is less than fancy.
Cheers,
Arma

PS you have all been more than kind with sharing your information. I hope one day I can be as forthcoming with another generation of sheath makers.
