Pattern traced for a similar knife.

Initial pattern cut for knife - with belt loop left long (to be adjusted to the knife once fitted.

Sheath is dampened and initial fitting is done. I didn't like how large the sheath was - so I trimmed about 1/4 inch off the outside of the sheath total.

Sheath trimmed and inside grooves cut from the blade down to make a more form fitting sheath. Belt loop is cut at this point.

Secondary fitting to show the lines and check for general look. Much cutting and sanding happened here.

Custom welt pattern made and welt cut.

Welt cut and traced on the knife to ensure fitting and mark glue lines.

Makers mark put on the back.

Belt loop and the majority of the opening burnished.

Welt skived and inside of sheath and welt glued.

Welt glued in - skive marks obvious here.

Welt cut even with the sheath and primarily sanded.

Stitch groves cut and stitch marker used to mark stitched. Some manual adjstment was needed toward the tip.

Holes punched and overstitcher used to set where stitching will go.

Third fitting - to show where the welt stop was placed to prevent the sheath from being over inserted.

Sheath Stained.

Sheath wiped down, and sealed.

At this point I decided to take the mountain bike out - took a header - seperated my shoulder - went to the ER for X-Rays and have a level 2 or possible 3 shoulder separation. Looks like no surgery - just rehab - but GOD it hurts.

Got home - on a lot of pain medication and stitched the belt loop and one of the outside stitches:

Went to bed - woke up and stitched the rest of the sheath.

First wet forming - really just using the dampness that is still in the sheath:

Burnished the edges, stained them, and put some Montana Pitch Blend on the edges - I am now waiting for that to dry before finishing the edges.

A little slow with my dominant shoulder in a lot of pain - but I hate taking drugs - so...

Needs about three days to dry - and I will get some glamour shots up of it.

I had fun with this one Knute - it needs about three days to dry and then we can figure out how to get it over to you. I learned a lot. I flared the top like I had been wanting to practice - and I added a weep hole to the bottom of the sheath after looking up the average snow and rainfall in Norway. It should drain if your sheath every gets soaked.

I am happy the injury happened after I had the heavy lifting done. Stitching was a pain, literally, but I am proud of this one and happy to have a guy like Knute who was so happy to receive the sheath.

I hope you use her hard Knute.

Sorry to hear about your accident TF. I do hope you get on the mend soon. You are one heck of a guy to carry on and share all of this work and techniques with photos despite your injury and discomfort. A lowly thank you doesn't seem enough.

TF, sorry to hear about the shoulder. On topic, gorgeous work on that sheath, you nailed that beautifully, or is that stitched??? Nice work, I'm envious...

DD,

Al Stohlman would say you only nail it when you wet form. ;)

Thanks - when my wing heals - we will teach you how to make one of these. Sorry for the delays.

I like how you overcut the welt before glueing it to the sheath. I started do that awhile back and it has helped me a great deal.
