Hey guys. I need sheath for a ScrapYard DumpsterMutt with a 5" blade and a 1/4" spine. Looking for anything really. CHEAP! Less than $40 if possible. I like tactical small kydex and maybe some leather. Just lemme know if we can work something out. Does not have to be custom. If you know of a retailer that sells them lemme know. I had the same problem with my own Dumpster Mutt, so I cut some strips off a plastic milk bottle that was headed for the local 'scrap yard' (county dump), and melted them on with a paint remover gun. Remember to heat the plastic, not the knife. As each strip reaches a temperature where it will mold or weld to the next strip it will turn transparent. Stop the heat at that point, shape it, then let the knife cool. Use an old butter knife to smooth the joints, and wear gloves. Check the blade temperature often and don't let it climb above warm. Add a small weep hole near the bottom so when you wear it while swimming the sheath will drain. The plastic shrinks a little when cooling so that the fit will be fairly tight. When you are done, the whole thing can be smoothed on your grinding wheel. Add a loop at the back for a belt hanger. The finished product is as indestructible as any thing else on the market, and it can be painted too. Total cost (includes electricity) about 25 cents.
Note in the examples below a false top was added which serves as both a blade guide, and which also solves the issue of how to handle the oversize choil of the DM. If you are wondering about the protruding tabs, it is because I will be sewing this one into a leather cover and the tabs will be drilled and serve as anchor points for the stitching.
