Sheath help for used AK

Hi all. I just bought a used HI 18" AK, and it is awesome!

The sheath I received from the original user, however, is all jacked up. It fits too tightly, the leather around the mouth of the sheath is pulled outward and cut a little, the leather at the front of the sheath where the sweetspot sits is sliced through, and the metal end chape is also sliced and has come off.

Now what? Kydex? Repair/replacement?

Help, O wise lovers of all things khuky.

Welcome:)

You COULD send it off to Terry and have a new scabbard made. Or there are several very good leather workers that would do it for a good price. You could try making your own (even I can do that :p). Or, you could soak the scabbard, drive a wooden wedge into the mouth of it to stretch it, and let it sit for a few days. the slits in the scabbard can be "fixed" by giving it a wire wrap.

It just depends on what you would like to do:)

Once again, Welcome!

Well that's a start. I'm notoriously not handy with needle and thread. Who's Terry? Are there low-cost Kydex options out there?

Thanks!

Who's Terry?
Terry Sisco, Owner of the Sarki Shop. he is "old timer' here and longtime repairer of H.I. khukuri and sheaths. Great work at fair prices.

First you could make sure the frog isnt pulled too high on the sheath( just pull it down toward the chape), as this will tighten the throat and make the blade stick. They want to be tight, but not overly so. Glue down the parts that have pulled out, glue the chape back on and you could even try gluing the slit at the sweet spot. At least this should make the sheath usable again.
Terry also sells sheath covers if you want it pretty again.

Thank you! I knew this community would help. Since we're on a roll here - what glue is best?

it depends. for leather on leather, i like a product called Leather Weld. However, plain ol' Super Glue would probably work as well:)

It all depends on how well you work with adhesives....LOL.
Steelys suggestions would work fine. You could also use Epoxy, Hot glue or even plain old Elmers wood glue to bond leather to wood. Chapes are usually epoxied or hot glued.

Kydex??

that I can help you with :)

A kydex rig for that would be my suggestion if you dont want the bulk of the normal sheath

Dave made a great quickdraw rig for me. Actually, for an friend who's about to deploy.

If you are going to get the kydex sheath made up, you may as well experiment with the original sheath. In th FAQ there are some instructions on how to widen or tighten the sheath using water and wedges etc.

Sarki Shop is getting my M-43 sheath for a re-cover and a Sasquatch Special frog, as soon as I make up my mind what color I want the sheath covered in.

Anyone have pics of Sarki's work up close? Terry's pics are a tad too small on his site for my eyes.

Hmm, I think I need to talk to Leatherface about some stimulus projects in kydex . . . :)

If Ilbruche is back making sheaths again, he made a nice rig for me:

Leatherface does some very cool work:thumbup:

ilbruce makes some really excellent quickdraws. I don't now if he's doin any right now.

Dang you Cpl punishment and that sweet rig and that Deluth Possibles Bag pron:)

There's also something special about carrying your khuk in pants that you make yourself;), even if the first attempt is rough, it's ok. Use a leather punch and scraps from a leather store. It's a lot of fun.

:D
Glad to see ya enjoying your khuk,
chop safe and chop often

The Badger hole has produced some fine leatherwork. I'd love to have an identical rig for my M43 and R10. I was gonna ask where the bag came from but Greenwoods answered it for me. Cool lookin stuff.
