Although I personally love the traditional sarki sheaths, I have a friend who wants me to make him a more compact carry sheath for a small surupati. I was thinking about a sheath that hangs from a D ring in order to have it swing free, and not interfere with hiking, sitting, etc. on the left side. A leg tie-down seems mandatory. Any comments welcome..

It's a good idea and one I've considered myself.

2 things to watch out for:

1 - the loop may end up scratching you handle if you're not gentle (hiking is not gentle...:D) A wood handle will do better than a horn handle in this instance.

2 - Balance. In this type of setup, you run the risk of your khukuri not being balanced. Let me explain. Imagine putting your khuk in that sheath and holding it up in the air by the belt loop. Will it hang straight down? Probably not. The loop acts as a swivel (which has its benefits - as you pointed out) and your knife will pivot, causing it to hang against your leg, instead of next to your leg.

Now, that said, there are ways to get around concern #2. Just make sure at least half the handle is below the belt loop and you should be ok (ie. add a "back" to the sheath to stiffen it)

Sounds good, got any more details on construction (materials etc? I am guessing leather but anything else?)?

If you did a Sisco style quickdraw you wouldn't need to worry about it falling out. This sheath has an open spine are with a retaining strap, but the sheath is not wide enough to come out of the sheath without that strap being opened.

And I'll add this: If the siru is 12-16 inches, it may be possible to make a high ride (for side carry, forward angled) or horizontal (front or back belt carry, or pack carry) sheath for it.

Dunno, might get in the way.

I'm also a fan of the baldric for carry. Once can be easily fashioned from any large belt (or rope, bootlace, or cloth in a pinch). Goes thru the belt loop )or thru frog in a variety of ways), over one shoulder, under the opposite arm).

When designing the sheath, you should have the khuk fer it handy for measuerments, and also for determining the balance points for the desired hang angle.

TSisco has the mad skills when it comes to khuk scabbards of various make and model.

Is there a good sheath made for carry?
something for modern carry for a small 12" blanace, or AK, that would be a quick draw perhaps adjustable angle, and no need for the small blades

I would like to find two types one for belt and one perhaps shoulder for inside a jacket

Lots of good advice here. When I make a new design I often make one out of light cardboard (file folder stock) just to see how everything fits. If all goes well I can use it as a pattern to cut the leather. I always seem to end up taping on a little more and trimming a bit here and there. And.. Sometimes it goes into the trash can.
