So I met a local fabric craftsman who mostly does military-style custom bags etc.
He's working on a sheath prototype for me, starting from the BK-short sheath style. He'll be able to make them in various lengths, which will be good for me since most of my stuff is shorter.

My question for Y'all is: what sort of things would you change about the BK-short sheath if you had the chance? Once the bugs are worked out, it would be very easy to have them configured for BK-shorts as well. In fact he's using one of my BK-16's and the matching insert for development.

I'm thinking fabric colors/prints, pouch size (or not at all), side-eyelets?.... what else?
Removable insert? (velcro or snap-thru?)
top-flap for small knives?

exciting! Main annoyance for me with the tweener sheaths is getting the knife in/out without cutting the retentions straps, end up needing to use 2 hands. It was the reason why I decided to go with a kydex sheath. Interesting to see how they turn out!

Removable insert would be nice. Held in with a Chicago rivet through a tongue would be easy to do.
Side grommets - yes
Sandwich a piece of tape measure inside the retention straps so they hold open when you want them to. (Ala slap bracelet)
Pouch on front with slip pocket behind it to mount a pry bar or bk13 sized item

Maybe incorporate spare hardware for the scales?

A fitted insert that eliminates the rattling, and retains the knife.

Something that wears a bit higher on the hip?

How about some thing you could put a knife in to carry it around in?
bruh, why don't you ask for a million bucks while you're at it? 😅

great ideas, thank you!
Couple thoughts on some of them:

Hip height: Hmm, with shorter blades this could work. With the ~5" blades with full-size handles you end up drawing into your armpit, but you're right, more options here.

Strap protection: YES. That was one reason I thought about a top flap. Much less likely to get sliced. Maybe replaceable retention straps? I'd worry that the slap bracelet thing would wear the strap from the inside really fast and maybe be fiddly to make. But I'll talk to him about it.

Insert: I like the chicago screw idea. It would be nice to be able to clean it and/or wash the whole sheath w/o the insert.

Insert2: Indeed, these could be customized to the exact blade and then finished. In that case they would definitely need to be removable/reversible for left-hand use, or scout, or bag-strap. I'm more likely to squeeze kydex around a couple standard forms at common thicknesses, but if they're removable then all options are on the table. Another good argument for the previous item.

Pocket: ooh, interesting. Like a skateboard backpack. Haha, BK-13-sized thing. Some of the MAIN knives will be not much larger than a BK-13!

Keep 'em coming!

The old school Buck 119 sheaths had a neat
fold-over flap that when unbuttoned did not have much leather in the way of the cutting edge. The flap also added a degree of protection to the handle.

I also like the Ontario 499 metal plate, albeit probably not necessary. The metal plate could be exchanged for a piece of leather that could be used as a strop.

I am just spit balling stuff here... don't mind me.

😁

I'll look up the Ontario thing when it's not midnight here.
Say hi to Nautilus for me. :)
