Sheath made from a belt?

I am sitting here looking at an old belt I just cut open, and saw something: the belt is essentially just a sheath. It has front and rear pieces of leather with well stitched sides to join them. With minimal work to close the end and add a method of carry, it would carry a slim knife. A wider belt would be even better, I suspect.

Anyone ever tried this?
