Hi:
Is there any information available on making leather sheaths? I have Loveless's book and it is a lot of help. Just wondering if there are any other books I should be searching for. Thanks for the reply.

I have a book somewhere, I think it is by sid latham....on knifemaking, has a big section on sheaths that is very helpful...it is a very old book, came out before loveless' and may be hard to find....i will try to find it and send you the correct title and publisher...there must be one around somewhere....The thing I have found most helpful is....one..buy the very best leather....9/10 oz oak finish vegetable oil tan double shoulders...it costs but its worth every penny in the end...make very careful template of the sheaths you want to make from some sort of thick paper that is easy to trace off of.....always, repeat always, cut on the big side, dont ever try to scrimp on leather, have an overhang all the way around or you will be sorry...I only make two type of sheaths, the loveless pouch type and the randall type with a snap...as I have an American Straight Needle stitcher and the throat is very narrow and only allows a few different moves that i can do. any more questions email me...tom

I purchased a book from Tandy Leather on making leather cases. Shows you how to make cases and sheaths for many things from knives to binoculars to guns, etc. Also, it includes many tips on stitching, attaching belt loops,wet-forming, etc. Very useful book.
