I'm curious if others have considered making their own sheaths or is it more cost effective to buy aftermarket. I like both leather and kydex and even the two combined. Have any of you invested in kydex materials and the press to form them? I have a knife coming that is a bit unique and do not like the Cordura sheath it comes with. I don't see any aftermarket options either. Are there kits offered that contain everything to start making kydex sheaths? Thanks in advance.

You can always press the report button, it will pop up a field where you can ask a mod to move the thread. The answer to your question though, isn't straightforward. Making a functional leather sheath isn't really that hard, the leather and tools might cost less then getting a good custom job, but it will definitely lack the quality of professional work. I've seen everything needed to make a kydex sheath at my usual leather supply shop, and since it's a common chain I bet that yours will as well.

If you have the time and are willing to learn new skills and make new mistakes, then making your own kit is satisfying. I usually aim for a rustic aesthetic that makes my efforts look more intentional, but that won't really work with kydex. You could invest the time and money in making your own but not be happy with the result, and it may very well take a few tries to get it right. If you want all the details to be correct the first time, go check through the Services Offered part of the Knife Exchange here and select a maker whose work you like and wait time you can accept.
