Sheath question for a POS knife

I've got a dilemna. I've got a machete, Tomahawk (United Cutlery :barf:, impulse buy from several years ago, TOPS copy), and the sheath is falling apart. I've duct taped the hell out of it, and thats good enough for now, but I actually use this machete sometimes, and have decided to leave it in my truck. I've got an SUV, and that way, if the blade gets lifted, I'm only out 15 bucks. The blade isn't too bad, it performs, I wouldn't put my life in its hands, but it is an okay user.

The dilemna you ask? The sheath is a POS! I would like to get a better one, but I obviously don't want to spend money on a 15 dollar knife. I have access to scraps of fabric, enough to make my own sheath. Any ideas on what fabric to use, something I won't have to worry about, something I can just leave in the back of my truck, something that won't rot too fast? Or should I just stick with duct tape?

BTW, my other truck fixed blades are hidden and locked away, inside the truck...

i read a post about a guy that took pvc pipe heated it until it softened, and smashed it down with two pieces of plywood to make a sheath, might be something that you might try, if i can find the post i will put up a link.

Actually man , you might want to have a look on eBay for used sheaths , I have found a few on there.

sew some heavy duty canvas toghether like the millitary sheaths, id double layer the canvas and add a welt around the edge and throat of the scabbard.

Go to a store that sells climbing gear, and get some tubular webbing. Instant sheath with a stitch hear & there.

I have a 14" Tramontina without sheath that I got for about $1 US, I just keep it in rolled newspaper.

A guy I know made a simple machete sheath by folding lengthwise some wide webbing and riveting along every couple of inches.

I have seen sheaths made from cardboard covered with fabric.

The flattened PVC pipe seems like an interesting idea, "poor man's Kydex".

Sounds like a great time to try out some kydex. From what I've seen, the first sheath most people make doesn't come out all that well, but is functional. It's a chance to practice AND get something useful.
