Sorry for the most likely ridiculous question but can someone give me a solid answer on the purpose of the squared off bottom of the bushcraft sheaths? What purpose does it serve to be square at bottom? Thanks

I have no earthly idea, but a couple of logical guesses would be to be carried inside the back pocket and the bottom would tend to settle and ride upright better. it may be to facilitate tying it to a pack........or Someone made one like that a long time ago and the newcomers think that's the way it should be. if there is a real reason I'd like to know also.

Here's what one of those guru's of the Bushcraft/Survival community told me back in the late 90's when that stuff started to get a hold.
First: Simplicity, cut a rectangle of leather, fold it over, cut another rectangle and cut out the shape of the knife and you have a welt. Sew it up and bingo, sheath. Punch a hole in the top where the welt is and insert a carabiner and another BINGO you have a carry system. Simplicity. Punch a hole in that area at the bottom and you have another hole to lash into, Bingo, multi carry.

I'm not sold either. This guy was and is at the top of his game so his followers listen.

Some good answers there, it also may be a case where left or right hand carry, making the way you insert the knife not matter so much.
