I wear my HI a LOT. I spend a lot of time out doors and I even wear it a lot around the property for practical reasons. I can see right now I'm going to eventually wear out the original scabbard in it's current incarnation. At the very least the original leather covering is going to get wrecked.

I'm more concered with practicality and durability than pretty.

So, I have a couple of questions from the experience of the HI user pool here.

1) Has anyone here ever wrapped or re-skinned their original HI scabbard to make it more durable. Like just wrapping the whole thing with wet rawhide or some such material.

2) How many here have a Sarki Shop scabbard? How does the quality/durability compare to the original and how did you like it?

3) Anyone here ever get a kydex sheath/scabbard made for their HI?

I've made one of kydex, wrapped in leather. I prefer it that way since I don't want any rivets, nor do I want a big rectangular sheath.

I was halfway into making a tutorial on this and stopped for some reason. :( Maybe when I'm done with the villager rehabs, I'll pick it back up again.

One thing to keep in mind if you do kydex: use the heavier stuff. Don't bother with the .090 and .060 stuff. I got mine from a local plastics place at 0.125" thick. Worked great, just takes a longer time to cool down.

I would be VERY interested to see how you did that. Just a picture or two would help immensely.

Mrostov:

Sounds like you really need a Sarki Shop WWII scabbard with a canvas cover. I'll try to post a pic of the one I got from Terry Sisko recently. It seems to me the only way to wear this thing out is to smash the wood liner. The canvas keeps brush off the leather and everything is a perfect custom fit.

Well, that one posted so I'll post one of the end view. The Karda and Chakma are contained in the frog rather than the scabbard. Also, there is a ridge carved in the scabbard body and the frog has two straps which lace above and below it. This prevents drawing the scabbard out of the frog, or shoving it too far in.

There isn't a wrinkle anywhere on this thing and everything is a perfect custom fit. However, like with pictures of khuks, you won't appreciate how well made and ergonomically (sp?) perfect these scabbards are until you have one in hand.

By the way, this scabbard is left handed and please don't study the Karda too close. It is a clumsy first attempt and I'm going to make a better one.

Jens Anso has a kydex tutorial HERE

I have also seen a tutorial by him showing how to cover the kydex with leather, but couldn't find it quickly.

Yep. A while back I made me a lefty scabbard using the original wood core pieces, but new leather and a lay-flat design for the karda, chak, and awl. Snakeskin throat n/ evreythin. Kydex lined. Painted with acrylics.

Cliff,
I'm glad you like the rig and thanks for posting the pics.
I like the chakma and karda handles too.

Mrostov,
Give me a call or e-mail, we can fix you up with a nice rig.
God Bless.

hmph. I was wondering where the U.S. Gov't got the idea for that campaign...here it was Khukhuris all along!

"chak and awl, baby!"

Excellent handiwork, by the way; beautifully detailed.

Mrostov,
I've got a sheath that Terry made for me and I'm very happy with it. Whether he makes you a new sheath or repairs your current one you won't be sorry! Terry does outstanding work!

Well, the tinkerer in me wants to try a couple of things before I have another sheath made.

I like the durability and weather resistance of kydex, but kydex sheaths tend to have a large footprint. The slender profile of the original style sheath provides for surpisingly comfortable carry. I like the way the WWII Sarki Shop sheath had the accessories in the frog. I'd like to ad to my sheath package a flat profile, 'skeleton' handle skinning knife I carved out of a file with a dremel tool. I also made a new karda out of a broken file and a piece of a pecan branch.

I did make a replacement frog the other day for my current sheath out of tight weave 2" nylon webbing. Instead of a belt loop I used a military style attachment clip from an M9 Baretta holster. This allows me to take the khukuri on and off quickly without removing my belt. It also allows secure and rapid attachment to things like packs and canteen straps.

I have some pics I'll see if I can get a way to upload them.
