I realy like the pouch type sheaths, but has anybody figured a way to keep from putting wear marks on the gaurd? Nothing major, and doesn't even qualify as scratches, but noticable non the less on a highly polished gaurd. It happens with me on everything from brass and bronze to 410 stainless.

Just have to live with it? Doesn't bother me much on a working grade, but on a nice damascus knife?

If you use brass or bronze for the guard you will have to live with it. They will show all the rub marks. Also the chemicals in the leather will patina them faster .Tell the customer that it is the sign of a good fit.

I likt that response! Just tell 'em it's the sign of a good fit.
I haven't figured out a way to avoid it yet. Actually, I've quite trying.
I do a wet molded sheath with sort of a cam lock on the guard tip so it won't fall out.
One thing I have done lately is really soak the sheath well with pure neatsfoot oil. I have lost ALL of the discoloration that comes from the chemicals in the oil. It also tends to soften the leather a smidge and has thus minimized the abrasiveness of the leather.

'bout what I was afraid of, I do a hot wax dip and it makes the inside soft and still stiff enough to lock the gaurd in. Haven't had one patina with yet with the wax, but it drives me nuts with the burnishing on the gaurd sides.

Thanks, may have to try a pig skin linned one, but I suspect it'll be the same.

Never tried it, but.... Just thinking about it, would a slightly radiused front edge on the guard help? The "wear" would occur on the radius and maybe not be as visible. Just a thought.

Deer Skin for a liner would work as well as pig skin...

If ya fit the knife to the sheath at the guard, you are gonna get wear marks...That is just the price ya pay...

personally I kinda like the patina that comes from it..:D

At some time in the past, someone asked a holster maker what to do to avoid bluing wear on a pistol. The reply was, "Leave it in the box". The same applys here! ---Sandy---

I also water form the sheath to the knife. When dry,
I dye the inside of the sheath, let dry. Using Gum Tragacanth #2264-01 from Tandy Leather. I coat the upper part of the pouch - guard to the top, let dry and burnish with a deer antler tip to a high sheen. Then a coat of wax before sewing it up.

Sandy,
I was getting ready to pm you a link to this thread...Good quote...Gotta remember that..lol

Well, it puts my mind at ease, but I still want to try a linned one one day, maybe a mountain man type sheath and bowie.

Will, this is in response to R. Coon's comment about putting a radius on the guard. I do it all the time, unless it's a flat-faced oval guard for a Bowie or something.
It not only minimizes the wear, but also sort of helps "guide" the guard down into the sheath.

How about lining the throat of the pouch with sheepskin, stitched and glued in, fluffy side inwards. It would grip and polish the guard.

fit the knife handle and guard with a tight fitting boot and a loose fitting sheath
no more rubbing marks  :D

chrome the guard  :D
