Sheath question

I'm having problems with the search function for some reason, so thought I'd just ask. I've got a 3rd Generation C641 with the horizontal belt sheath. I had never seen this sheath with any other Schrades, but tonight I noticed an SC503 and an SC505, both with this type of sheath. So, are these 3rd Gen sheaths with the wrong knives, or did Schrade put them out with other knives?

Thanks,

Dave

I believe Schrades horizontal sheath was standard with the C641, and the LB4 I have had one included in the generic brown box. I do not think it was standard offering with any trappers or stockman of any sort. I would imagine though, the sheath was offered as a separate item during the time the 3rd Gen knives were in production.

I do not think there were multiple sizes of that sheath, and I went back and checked it out. The trapper and 80t knives are a little long to slide in and out easily.

I've never seen a "NIB" package with the SC503, or SC505 with a horizontal sheath either. I'd vote for "with the wrong knives".

In 1983, Schrade listed quite a few accessory sheaths, eight all told. Among them were the SAS12 horizontal belt slide for 3 ½" knives and the SAS13 horizontal belt slide for 4" knives. I don't see them listed after 1986.

From the 1984 Pricelist:

I also note that of the 3rd Gen knives listed that year, only the #C641 is listed with a sheath, though the sheath isn't shown.

PS- You are welcome. Please feel free to use Larry (lrv's) archive site as a research resource. A lot of friendly Schrades live there!
PSS- Yes, I changed the sword in my avitar to an Old Timer 165OT and no one noticed!

Interesting. Thanks for the info Codger.

Says right there the C-641 is 3.5" Closed, so it gets the smaller sheath. The sheath measures right at 5" in length. Couple that with my mis-information regarding the trapper or 8OT not sliding in the SAS-12. Those ones on Ebay must be the SAS-13 and would fit perfectly.

I've assumed the horizontal sheaths were just made for the C-641. The one that is a little longer would fit quite a few knives if one was so inclined. Like an LB5 at 3.75" or probably even a 123OT.

I saw one once go out with an 896K. I had an extra at one time and sold it with a C-648.

Roland - I think you are right about those being a find if they are the longer one.

I bid and won the 503SC Dave referred to with the included SAS-13 longer sheath Codger identified, a horizontal belt sheath to accomodate up to 4" knives. It just fits a 4.25" trapper as well.

Surprise! It came in a box, a Schrade packaging I've not seen before, and paperwork. The box would have been too big for just the knife, and originally was likely to have a dust cover.

Not certain the original package was this sheath and knive combo, but probably. It is unused. The box is a dead match for the length of the sheath. It is marked 503 SC / 2201 on the end of the box. I've not found anything on that number yet.

It's the only Scrimshaw knife I own though, so maybe it's not a new package to someone else.

The paper work says 167UH. Is that just a advertisement or did they slip that in just to say it has papers?

These sheaths could be gotten in 2 sizes that would fit almost any folding knife.

It is advertisement they threw in to a lot of boxes back then. They sometimes have dates and info that help date a knife. The Uncle Henry had papers verifying a specific knife pattern, but Old Timers and Scrimshaws had Schrade propoganda. Ebay sellers and probably sellers at knife shows have been known to use improper boxes, papers and sheaths as well.
