Are the leather sheaths that come with HI knives made of acid free leather or do you have to

store blades seperately?

Thanks In Advance,

Mike W.

Don't Know about the Acid -free part, but i've never had a problem storing my khuks in their sheaths.

To my knowledge, most people with HI khuks have very little rusting issue from storing them in the scabbard. I think the wood inside the scabbard helps:) i would suggest using at least a light coating of mineral oil on the blades for long storage just to combat humidity.

Yeah don't know about the acid free part but MOST of the inside part is wood. The sheaths are leather covered.

I beleive most of the sheaths are water buffalo raw hide.
They shrink to fit the wood.
There is no acid tanning at all.
i think it may be sacreligeous to use caw hide, being Nepal is a Hindu country.
If I'm wrong, shoot me.

anyone know where I could get a custom kydex sheath for my khuk? I've been trying to contact sharpshooter sheath systems but have been unlucky so far.

rksoon - I don't want to knock Sharpshooter, but I think you'd be better off contacting Leatherface who frequents this forum (just check the member's listing).

He works in leather and kydex, though I'm not totally sure he does knives as big as khuks. He is definitely worth a try.

Dan Koster also has done some nice kydex sheaths in the past, but he's a pretty busy fellow and may not be able to get to something like this any time soon.

Good luck!

Great, thanks Andy!! I will try them out.

Since I'm on it, this goes out to all you experienced Khuk users. I'm pretty new to the khuk field , do most people tend to keep their original sheaths for outdoor use? I just ordered a 16.5" WWII (writhing in anticipation) from Yangdu to serve as my general outdoor/hiking/survival belt knife (hopefully soon to be paired with BRKT Bravo-1 or Northstar) and am wondering if I should go with a kydex sheath for hard use.

Any thoughts?

I generally use my khuks as camp knives, or they ride inside my pack. I have made leather replacement sheaths for some of mine, but usually just use what they come in.

One thing lots of folks do is remove the karda and chakma, and use a pair of pliers to pull the little leather retainers out of the sheath. They are usually just a rolled strip of leather stapled into the larger sheath.

Once they are out, you can slide the frog higher on the sheath. It will compress the top of the sheath. This makes the profile slimmer, and it lets the whole knife hang lower on your belt.

I've taken to giving the kardas away to people to use as letter openers.
