Sheath recommendations for a custom 110

After reading everyone's post I've decided a custom 110 is in my future. It will probably have to wait until after Christmas though. I like the brown elk horn handle with a satin or mirror finish.

My question is this: Would you recommend a cordura or a leather sheath. My logic is that the interior of a leather sheath would be more rough than the cordura. Given that this would be a knife to be looked at and not to use I wouldn't want the sheath to cause undue wear on the knife. Am I wrong in my thinking?

Thanks for the help folks,
Clay

Clay,

I have one of Buck's customs similar to the configuration that you mention. I requested brown leather with mine. You are correct in thinking that the leather is a little less kind to the exterior finish than the cordura would be.

I have considered using one of the many cordura sheaths that I have for mine. I would say go with cordura especially if you weren't considering is for carry duty. If it is just for your collection I wouldn't even put it in a sheath. Leave it in the protective wrapper that it comes in, or at the very least in a slip case. The sheath is for carrying not for storage. JMHO.

Either way you will love the knife if and when you decide to get it.

Keep in mind that a leather sheath is for carrying and not for storage, since the acids in the leather will certainly tarnish brass bolsters. Leather, of course, will better protect your knife in the outdoors than cordura will. I use leather and cordura--cordura for storage and for carrying in the suburbs and leather for carrying when fishing or in the woods.

Interesting choice for the different uses, is there a specific reason you choose these materials for a given activity?

I tend to carry in cordura/nylon more often than not but I really like leather as well. The best nylon sheath I've seen for a 110 is Maxpedition's tube sheath and I've made several leather ones for more dressy needs.

For storage I feel that open air is the best, any pouch or sheath is going to retain more moisture than if it were just sitting in a drawer, you just have to be careful not to bump it. After that I would look at a silicone impregnated sleeve, they work well in my experience.
