sheath recommendations for seal pup elite?

hi all. just got a seal pup elite, and i have to say that while the knife is awesome, the sheath is a real dissapointment.

the two issues are:
> the strap that secures the knife in place is really loose, and thus the blade moves around all over the place in the sheath. ignoring that it rattles and slides all over, if you tilt the sheath just a bit the blade is no longer in place within the "groove" in order to cut a cord or something.

> the mechanism for securing it to your body, or a backpack lets say, is whacked. it only has a plastic plate that can be slid up so that you can secure it to a belt. sog, fyi.... you can't secure anything to your belt when you are hiking with a big pack.

so i have to either find some place on my pack to put this thing or replace it. i prefer to place a fixed blade like this upside down on my left shoulder strap so i can easily grab it. not gonna happen with this sheath.

any recommendations on a good sheath that i can get? aftermarket would be fine, as would some other sog sheath if it works well. ideally, the sheath would hold the blade in place even if the strap is left undone (like on the gerber silver trident).

thanks for any help!

PhOust, I have several of the sheaths you mentioned and have found that the ones that have been slightly loose work great after a slight "tune up". (Or you can contact SOG and ask them what to do.) If you want to try to fix it yourself, see link below, (#2) (note: I used a hair dryer to help mine a little, seemed to help  )

I was told the "quick attach" belt loop was designed just for the ease of attachment/removal to belts, straps etc. Once you lock it, it seems to stay locked well. It is a little hard for me to attach, but after a few trys I realized that it works great once I mastered it. The other thing I found was after I adjusted the kydex, my knife would not fall out even when it was unsnapped carried upside down. (the kydex adjustment will stop the rattle).

Last but not least, I would recommend contacting Eric at "On Scene Tactical" and he probably has a kydex sheath in stock to fit your knife. If he does not have one in stock, he can probably make you one pretty quick. Eric is a pro at this stuff and a great guy to work with. If you want a quality leather sheath, then you need to talk to "Wildmanh" here on SOG forum. The reason I am recommending these two people is because I have sheaths from both and they are absolute quality.

First off let me apologize for any possibly bad sheath you may have received. The knife should not rattle in the sheath at all. If you are at all unhappy with the sheath please contact out warranty department at 888-405-6433 x229 or warranty@sogknives.com. They will be happy to help you out with the sheath. If there is anything else that you might need please feel free to contact me.

Thanks

thanks chris, i will give them a call.

regarding the belt attachment, is there a replacement or anything that allows the sheath to connect in a different way? i am not interested in attaching it to my belt is the issue.

are there other sheaths that sog makes that will accommodate my seal pup elite?

thanks again.

thanks robbie. the belt attachment is certainly easy enough to operate, but it is big and doesn't really allow me to attach it to anything other than a belt.... at least not in a way i have discovered yet.

as far as size, i think my sheath might be a bit beyond the hairdryer tactic, unless that has a *significant* effect on reducing the strap size (like by half). it does sound like the sheath can accommodate the knife well if it fits, which i am glad to hear.

i will check out eric's site too. i appreciate all the help and input!

I got in a hurry yesterday when answering your question and skipped part two. We are currently working on a optional system to attach the sheath without using the quick release belt lock. Check back with me or the warranty department in a couple weeks and we should have something.

It has taken a little longer than first thought. We are still working on it though. Once we have a fianlized design I will see about posting it.
