Sheath retention on the Gerber LMF2

Hey guys. I recently was at a sports tore and found the gerber LMF2 on sale for $65. Having a gift card from Christmas I got it to try it out myself. No complaints really. Quite a nice tactical/utility knife (yes I know it is not a survival knife) that still does well with most Busch craft purposes. Any ways, I need to know how to get that retention clip to loosen up. I don't want to cut it off or stretch it too much, but it is nearly impossible to get it when attached to your calf (like I prefer). Any suggestions on how I could loosen it a bit. Thanks in advance.

You prefer a large heavy knife sheathed ... to your CALF?? O...K...

Anyway, GERBER issued an official response to this complaint (retention too strong for normal deployment) back when they released the knife... 2006 I think. First off, the high retention is deliberate, it's so the sheath functions as a handle when using the knife as a hammer or glass-breaker as illustrated on the packaging. However, to reduce this retention, it is not necessary to alter/bend/cut the retention clip. Simply apply a thin coat of mineral oil or other lubricant to the inside of the clip or the rubber guard-overmold. This greatly reduces the effort required to withdraw the knife and lasts for quite a while. However, to maintain this level of retention, you will occasionally need to add oil again. i hope this helps!

Dear Chiral.gromlin,

yes I don't mind this knife strapped to my leg. This knife has great balance which makes up for its weight in hand. Now the leg straps that came with it are phenomenal. Slightly rubberized in a way hard to describe, Little rubberized bumps really in two rows along the length of it. Also it has a small portion of two layer elastic/cloth like material that stretches to a perfect grip. Also how I solved the retention problem was I put the knife in so the thick guard of the knife stretched the retention slightly (didn't leave it in like that too long) and is snug and is now easy to draw. So it all went great and I have a tactical vest ordered so I'm pumped! :D
