Sheath Storage

Forgive my naïveté, but I keep my knives in a Craftsman drawer in the garage in a dry environment. All my knives that have sheaths I usually have kept stored in those sheaths. I have heard a few times that you shouldn't keep your knives stored in their sheaths. This runs a little counter intuitive to me. So why not store them in their sheaths?

That is more critical with chrome tanned leather, veg tanned is less so. also depends on the steel, and the storage. For example, I keep a couple knives in a sealed box with a large desiccant pack, and have had no problems. but I've seen another knife (154cm blade) get corrosion spots from its nylon sheath, stored in open air in a high humidity environment. Nylon likes water, so that is not a surprise to me. If you are just storing knives in a drawer, I'd keep the sheaths separate, as that will be naturally a higher humidity zone.
